ESPN Radio Goes Live on Slacker

Slacker Personal Radio, an Internet radio station, has begun carrying content from ESPN Radio. The move, part of San Diego-based Slacker’s strategy to differentiate itself from a growing horde of streaming-music propositions —notably LastFM, Pandora, Live365, and Spotify — was announced last March but went live this week.

Those using Slacker’s basic, free service can access a programmed ESPN station featuring selected stories, interviews, and segments from ESPN Radio (aka ESPN Audio), including SportsCenter, Mike and Mike in the Morning, The Scott van Pelt Show, and The Herd with Colin Cowherd, as well as ads controlled by ESPN Radio. Paid subscribers using Slacker Radio Plus and Slacker Premium Radio get an ad-free version and can create a customized myESPN Radio station based on specific sports, teams, and divisions that they’re interested in. They are also able to time-shift programs.

Slacker describes the venture as the first application of ESPN Radio that listeners can personalize: free-service users can skip a limited number of stories; paid subscribers can skip as many as they want. Only news and commentary will be streamed, no live sports events and games. The streamed audio is in stereo.

Currently, ESPN Radio on Slacker is optimized for Android devices and the Web. An updated Slacker app with ESPN for iOS has been submitted and will be available pending Apple approval.

ESPN Audio is the country’s largest sports-radio network, providing more than 9,000 hours of talk and event content annually to 24 million listeners a week on more than 700 stations, including owned stations in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, and Dallas and more than 350 full-time affiliates.
