NetApp Media Content Management System Streamlines Storage Needs

NetApp today rolled out the NetApp Media Content Management (MCM) system at SMPTE, designed for bandwidth-intensive environments that need always-available data access workflow processes. Among the highlights? Throughput of up to 50Gbps reading and 30 Gbps writing per single 40U rack and support of up to 1.8 PB of each 40U rack; and 40% fewer disk drives and 25% less rack space and power over previous offerings.

The system integrates with Quantum StorNext file systems, allowing collaboration between professionals from different locations and time zones. And coupling the StorNext database with NetApp E-Series storage users can handle formats like HD, 2K and 4K resolutions as well as 3D animation, special effects, and delivery.

Accoring to NetApp, recent testing by ATTO Technology using the company’s Celerity Fibre Channel Host Bus Adapters (HBAs) with Multipath Director technology, found that the NetApp MCM solution outperformed all previously tested storage subsystems. New benchmarks were set across several media industry test regimens, including the number of uncompressed HD video streams simultaneously supported for Apple Final Cut Pro editors. With four Macintosh clients running Final Cut Pro 7, the NetApp MCM solution played back 22 uncompressed HD (1920 x 1080, 10-bit YUV) video streams overnight without dropping any frames.

“The MCM solution is optimized for workflow performance and scalability; it will allow Media and Entertainment companies to architect more integrated media workflows,”says Chris Cummings, NetApp vice president of marketing.
