Campus Clips: Bob Costas Falls Into First Sandusky Interview; Success of Carrier Classic Could Spawn Similar Events

NBC Sports’ Bob Costas was the first to interview former Penn State coach Jerry Sandusky about his sexual-abuse allegations when the two spoke via phone on NBC’s Rock Center with Brian Williams last night. According to an interview today on The Dan Patrick Show, Costas admitted that when the segment went to tape, he had no plans to interview Sandusky and instead intended to speak with Sandusky’s lawyer Joseph Amendola. However, when Amendola offered Costas the opportunity to speak with Sandusky directly over the phone just minutes prior to taping, he took it. Sandusky claimed his innocence though Costas says he was shocked by, “the description of the things that he will acknowledge doing that he seems to think were only mistakes in judgment.” Costas also added that he was given no stipulations as to what he could ask during the interview…

…Friday’s Carrier Classic proved to be a success and, according to the USA Today, similar events could be right around the corner. Mike Whalen of the Morale Entertainment Foundation said he has teams lined up for a similar event for the next two years. Whalen said Connecticut and possibly Arizona will play in the event next year, along with a women’s game between Ohio State and Notre Dame. He said Michigan State has agreed to return in 2013, and that women’s teams from Connecticut and Stanford might play that year as well…

…A commission charged with tackling the multi-million dollar deficit in the Maryland Athletics Department plans to recommend the university drop eight of its 27 varsity teams. According to a source speaking with the Washington Post, the teams targeted for elimination are all three men’s running teams (indoor track and field, outdoor track and field, cross-country); men’s swimming and diving; women’s swimming and diving; men’s tennis; women’s water polo and aerobics and tumbling (formerly known as competitive cheer)…

…The first segment of the Quinnipiac produced series, “Bobcats Unleashed In HD” will air tonight at 9 p.m. on SportsNet New York (SNY). The thirty-minute program will immediately follow QU’s game against Yale University, scheduled to start at 7 p.m. The first broadcast on the New England Sports Network in HD (NESN-HD) will be on Saturday, Nov. 26 at 3 p.m., prior to the high-definition broadcast of the Quinnipiac men’s ice hockey game against UMass at 3:30 p.m…
