Ericsson, Tata Sky Bring On-Demand Pay TV to Indian Satellite Subscribers
Ericsson has supplied Tata Sky, a leading Indian direct-to-home (DTH) operator, with an advanced TV on-demand system that enables its eight million satellite subscribers to enjoy on-demand options on their TV.
The deployment is one of the first in the world to be based on Ericsson’s Media Delivery Network (MDN), a media-centric solution for the distribution, delivery and content management of linear and non-linear TV. It further builds on the relationship between Ericsson and Tata Sky, following the provision of an Ericsson headend system for the launch of high definition (HD) services this year.
“As we continue to offer our viewers new services that further enhance the value and enjoyment of their subscription, we are pleased to provide the ability to select their favorites from our exciting range of programs on-demand, whenever they want to watch them,” said Yigs Riza, Chief Technology Officer, Tata Sky. “With Ericsson’s global experience of delivering VOD and content management platforms, it made perfect sense to continue our great relationship and we are pleased to work with their team to roll out on-demand services to our viewers. We were impressed by Ericsson’s unique ability to implement the project from a Lead Integration position, bringing together various best-in-class components to make them work together seamlessly as one solution.”
This latest deployment strengthens Ericsson’s leadership in providing operators around the world with next-generation on-demand and progressive download solutions, irrespective of the delivery platform.
The Progressive Download System deployed by Tata Sky comprises the award-winning WatchPoint Content Management System (CMS) by Ericsson, The Ericsson Media Delivery Network (MDN), Ericsson’s Xport Time-Shifted TV and Xport Producer storage encoding, Ericsson is also providing managed services for the operation and maintenance of the project.
“The pay-TV market in India has now reached over 100 million subscribers. Considering the market potential, operators are looking at offering differentiated services in this increasingly competitive environment,” said Fredrik Jejdling, President & Head of Region, Ericsson India. “We take pride in supporting our customers to deliver the best experience possible to consumers. We’re pleased that Tata Sky has once again trusted our technology and services capabilities for the system and managed services support.”
