LTS Workshop Preview: IT’s Rapidly Growing Role in Postproduction

This year, SVG’s League Technology Summit will kick off with four technology workshops intended to meet the information needs of the industry. Workshops are open to all registered attendees and sponsors and will take place at the New York Hilton from 1 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Monday Dec. 12. Each workshop is designed to create an environment promoting open dialogue, with an emphasis on solving problems and helping attendees understand new concepts and developments. Leading up to the Summit, SVG is providing an in-depth preview of each workshop: DTV Audio, Next-Generation TV, Postproduction and IT, and Remote Production.

The move toward file-based workflows continues at a breakneck pace, making the role of IT departments at broadcasters, leagues, and teams more integral than ever. To underscore the quickly transforming role of IT in the pre- and post-production process, SVG will offer an entire workshop devoted to “Postproduction and IT,” featuring presentations and panels that address the critical issues facing this segment of the sports-production industry.

Post Masters: Tech Trends in Editing
The workshop kicks off with an in-depth look at the latest technology trends in the world of postproduction, featuring speakers from MTV Networks, HBO Sports, Versus (NBC Sports Network), Motion Picture Enterprises, and MASN. Editing for live sports broadcasts has always stretched the limits of creativity and technology. Find out how these postproduction outfits are adapting to a rapidly changing world, where the sheer number of distribution channels seems to grow exponentially each year.

How To Pay for Your DAM Facility
Next, the conversation turns to digital-asset management. The growth of tapeless workflows has allowed leagues to capitalize on their vast video libraries, but the question of ROI remains a sticking point for many. This session, featuring Paul Koopmann of Versus (NBC Sports Network) and Hosseein ZiaShakeri of Spectra Logic, provides practical and proven ways to bring your technical “dream system” to a “business reality.”

Editing in the Cloud: The Next Big Thing?
The prospect of a truly integrated file-based workflow between remote productions and the broadcast center has been the holy grail of sports production for decades. Now, thanks to cloud-based technologies, the goal may be in reach. Significant cost-efficiencies can be established once a robust and secure infrastructure has been built to accommodate editing anywhere anytime via a central host server. In this panel, speakers from leading vendors like Avid, Quantel, and Tata Communications let us know just how far we are from attaining the goal.

How To Use and Secure Mobile Devices
With the proliferation of mobile devices, how do you secure and utilize them efficiently in your enterprise? A growing number of sports-production entities already deploy mobile devices and tablets in their day-to-day production workflow, but this may be just the tip of the iceberg. Join MLB Network Director of IT Cindy Cortell and Enterprise Mobile Director of Services Marco Nielsen, as they discuss the use and security of Apple, Windows Mobile, and Google OS devices in sports production.

Collaborating To Create a Disaster-Recovery System
Is your network prepared to recover from a broadcast-IT disaster? In many cases, the answer is “no.” Can sports broadcasters create a collaborative system like those in financial services, where everyone shares the risk and costs? During this session, experts from MLB Network and SunGard Availability Services discuss the best strategies to ensure that you are prepared for a doomsday scenario.
