SVG Year in Review: September

September served up one of SVG’s favorite events of the year – the US Open. This year’s Open was thrown for a loop just before Day 1, as Hurricane Irene forced the USTA and broadcasters to weather some extremely unfavorable conditions early on. However, CBS, ESPN, Tennis Channel, and others were back in action with minimal matches postponed thanks to some quick thinking. CBS made its second 3D go-round with much success and a mass of tech vendors were one hand throughout the two-week tournament. The NFL returned to the field after a frantic offseason that was dominated by a lockout that kept mobile production vendors in flux. However, thankfully the league and players came to terms without the cancellation of any regular season games, allowing CBS Sports, Fox Sports, and NBC Sports Group to air its full slate of NFL games.

SVG Europe knocked IBC out of the park in its first year on the showfloor, providing live updates and overviews of the arsenal of new technologies offered by hundreds of vendors in Amsterdam. In addition, SVG Europe hosted the sixth annual Sport Technology Awards at IBC to honor those involved in four of the top sports productions of 2011.

On Sept. 28, ESPN and MLB Network provided sprawling coverage of what most fans and industry execs consider the best evening of baseball in decades, as four teams simultaneously battled for two playoff spots in the final night of the regular season.

Other top news included the PGA Tour extending its broadcast rights deals with CBS and NBC through 2021 and two new trucks from Mobile TV Group and Raycom Sports.
