Ratings Roundup: Duke-UNC Draws Big Crowd for ESPN, Super Bowl XLVI Sets More Demo Records

No. 9 Duke’s buzzer-beating win over archrival North Carolina on Wednesday earned a 2.2 U.S. rating and 3.121 million viewers on ESPN, up 47% in ratings and 32% in viewership from the same matchup in the comparable week last year (UNC/DUKE: 1.5, 2.367M), and up 57% and 38%, respectively from the same matchup in 2010 (DUKE/UNC: 1.4, 2.267M). The game ranks as the most-viewed Duke/North Carolina telecast on ESPN since 2009 (3.269M). Earlier in the night, #11 Georgetown/#2 Syracuse drew a 1.4 and 2.123 million viewers…

…In addition to establishing itself as them most watched program in the history of American television, Super Bowl XLVI set an all-time high for Hispanic viewership with an average of 10.4 million Hispanic fans tuning in to the game. That number marks the second consecutive Super Bowl with at least 10 million Hispanic viewers as well as a 68% spike over numbers from the game five years ago…

…The citywide sensation that is New York Knicks point guard Jeremy Lin has not gone unnoticed in the ratings game. MSG Network netted a 2.68 household rating in the New York DMA as the unheralded Harvard alum led the Knicks to a win over the Utah Jazz on Feb. 6, and notched a 2.42 rating for the team’s victory over Washington Wizards on Feb. 8. The 2.55 mark for the pair of contests is up 66% from the RSN’s 1.88 season average. Through its first 22 Knicks’ telecasts this season, MSG’s ratings were up 66% from a 1.13 mark during the corresponding number of contests the prior season…

…MLB Network reports that the first round of the channel’s first-ever game show, Baseball IQ which ran from Jan. 24 through Feb.8, drew a 22% increase in viewers compared to the same period in 2011. The second round of MLB Network’s Baseball IQ began last night and will continue every Tuesday through Thursday through February 23, running through the start of Spring Training.
