Campus Clips: D-III ‘Identity’ Campaign to Include Customizable Versions; ESPN Announces NCAA Softball Schedule

A new generation of Division III videos based on the “Discover/Develop/Dedicate” language of the division’s identity initiative is now available online, and versions that can be customized for school or conference use will be available for use later this month. The videos feature student-athletes discussing how, in addition to competing in intercollegiate athletics “for the love of the game,” they have benefited from the opportunity provided by Division III schools to discover their potential and develop their passions. Seven videos exploring those themes – including a 3:40-length video that was shown to Division III delegates at last month’s NCAA Convention in Indianapolis – now are viewable on the NCAA Division III YouTube channel, where they also can be linked to institutional and conference websites. Schools and conferences also soon will be able to download more than 50 different versions of the videos, including customizable versions (which will permit insertion of institutional images and messages) and closed-captioned and subtitled versions. The videos are cut in lengths suitable for use as public-service announcements in game broadcasts or webcasts (30 seconds long); as “featurettes” for use on institutional or conference websites (60 seconds long); or for public presentations about the Division III experience (the 3:40-minute version). They were produced for Division III by Innovative, Inc., which also created Division III’s first videos released in 2010…

…ESPN will televise 46 NCAA softball games this season beginning on Saturday, March 17 on ESPNU at 6 p.m. ET when Ole Miss travels to No. 2 Alabama. The regular season boasts 25 games across ESPN, ESPN2 and ESPNU and five games exclusively on ESPN3. The networks cap off the season with seven conference championships and will air games representing 10 conferences throughout the spring. ESPN’s returning line-up of college softball analysts includes Jessica Mendoza, Michele Smith, Cheri Kempf, Garland Cooper and Amanda Scarborough with Beth Mowins, Cara Capuano, Mark Neely, Justin Kutcher and Adam Amin on deck bringing the play-by-play each week…

……For the first time in league history, the Big South softball championship game will be televised to a national audience as ESPNU will air the title game on Sunday, May 13 live from the Radford University Softball Field at noon. ESPNU is also televising a regular-season Big South baseball game for the seventh consecutive year, as the network will telecast the Sunday, April 15 VMI at Coastal Carolina contest at 2 p.m. Meanwhile, ESPN3 will showcase the Saturday, March 24 Charleston Southern at Winthrop softball game live at 2 p.m. In addition, ESPN3 will be the home of the Big South baseball championship game for the second-straight year on Saturday, May 26 at 4 p.m…

…Karl Benson has officially been named fifth commissioner in Sun Belt Conference history. Benson replaces outgoing commissioner Wright Waters, who announced his retirement last October and will take over the position in July. In a teleconference with reporters, Benson was aggressive in regards to conference realignment, stating there is “an advantage to getting to at least 12,” noting that FBS and FCS schools in its footprint could be potential targets…

…West Virginia University settled its lawsuit with the Big East for an unspecified amount, clearing the way for the conference power Mountaineers to join the Big 12 in July in time for the fall football season. Athletic Director Oliver Luck said the terms of the deal were confidential and WVU wouldn’t release details. But Luck said no state, taxpayer, tuition or other academic dollars will be used in the settlement…

…Broadcasters in Connecticut are looking to improve opportunities for future broadcasters. The CBA Scholarship Awards for 2012 promises that up to $100,000 grants will be awarded, from one-year $2,500 grants to the $5,000 Nelson Brown Scholarship and the $10,000 Paul K. Taff Scholarship. Scholarships are based on need or demonstrated talent. The scholarships are limited to Connecticut residents though they are not limited to Connecticut schools. Recipients winners are allowed to attend the school of their choice (four-year, two year, technical, etc.) so long as they are pursuing a career in broadcasting, communications, marketing, engineering or electronics. Applicants may enter if they are graduating high school students or entering their second, third or fourth year of school…
