AVS Stars Coast-to-Coast at NBA All-Star, Academy Awards

Advanced Video Systems had a wild Sunday last month when the company’s gear played key roles in both the NBA All-Star Game in Orlando and the Academy Awards in Los Angeles.

For the Turner Sports broadcasts at NBA All-Star, AVS provided its customized P-1 wireless camera package for the steadicam and a RF Thomson LDK-6000 for the handheld. Both camera units were outfitted with a 1.4GHz Link L-1500 microwave system.

To add a unique perspective to the Slam Dunk Contest, AVS provided Turner Sports with a head-mounted wireless POV camera system, which Jeremy Evans wore for one of his contest winning dunks.

Turner Sports also turned to AVS to provide the wireless director assist monitors. These units permitted those who needed to follow the action the freedom to leave the production truck.

NBA TV/Entertainment filled the time between some of the major events with coverage of the halftime festivities and many other events around the Amway Arena all weekend long.  AVS provided one of its Thomson LDK-6000 cameras with the Viper “short” camera back.  For compatibility with the existing in-house unit, AVS used one of its 7Ghz Link L-1500 units with this handheld camera.

Over at the Orange County Convention Center, ESPN was busy covering the annual Celebrity All-Star basketball game.  One of the game highlights was a slam dunk by Rapper J Cole, who won a Grammy earlier in the month.  For the coverage of this always fun game, AVS provided another wireless Thomson handheld camera package with the Link L-1500 microwave system.

Meanwhile some 3,000 miles to the west, another All-Star event was taking place, the Academy Awards.  Because of the 2011 NBA Lockout and modified schedule, both events landed on the same weekend.

The Academy once again called upon AVS to provide four wireless camera systems to cover all aspects of the 90 minute Red Carpet Show. AVS provided two of its wireless  P-1 systems for the steadicams with a wireless prompter and two RF Thomson LDK-6000/8000 handheld cameras.

All of the camera systems were outfitted with 1.4GHz Link microwave systems while the prompter was fed via a 2GHz MRC PTX Pro. With its proprietary fiber optic antenna system, AVS was able to provide full coverage from the limo drop off, the entire Red Carpet, up the stairs into the venue and backstage inside the former Kodak Theater (aka The Chapter 11 Theater).
