NAB 2012: SGL Highlights FlashNet, Integration with Avid

Software Generation Ltd (SGL) has unveiled a web-based interface for its flagship SGL FlashNet archive system. Users of FlashNet now have a number of additional features that further simplify workflow procedures and enhance usability of the system. The new Graphical User Interface (GUI) will be demonstrated at Booth N1520.

The company has also announced a major integration with Avid that sees SGL FlashNet provide archive functionality for Avid’s news production solution, Avid NewsVision. A high-value system for local and regional broadcasters, the system provides an economical end-to-end workflow specifically configured and qualified for file-based news.

SGL FlashNet provides the tools for editors to archive or restore material directly from or to an Avid NewsCutter or Media Composer editing system saving time and money. Traditionally, in small news operations, editors have to locate material from the library and re-ingest. Now with Avid NewsVision and SGL’s fully integrated FlashNet archive and restore tools, editors have an easy path to file-based and HD workflows allowing them to quickly react to breaking news stories creating packages and sending them to air.

Howard Twine, SGL’s Product Manager says, “SGL has a long standing relationship with Avid and we’re delighted to extend our integration with the announcement of the Avid NewsVision system. File-based infrastructures have traditionally been deemed as too expensive for smaller broadcasters who often don’t have the budget for a full MAM or PAM solution. This offering removes the constraints of an analogue workflow at a price that suits smaller facilities.”

Using SGL FlashNet broadcasters and content owners can now very easily archive and restore material for smaller projects that fall outside the sphere of the controlling MAM or automation systems. Using the new FlashNet GUI’s powerful yet easy to use tools, the user can bundle material as required, before archiving to any configured FlashNet disk or tape group, once in the archive metadata can be extracted or added manually.

For finding and retrieving clips and sequences the new GUI contains powerful search utilities that allow users to quickly locate content in the archive, and to restore any material required to the original or alternate location. The interface can be used on any platform – Windows, PC, Mac or Linux.  Being able to restore material simply and quickly from outside the controlling application is a significant benefit to broadcasters providing easier access directly to and from the archive.

In addition to the new FlashNet web interface, SGL is also announcing FlashBrowse 3, a client-based web tool that further enhances and simplifies the archive workflow. FlashBrowse 3 provides at-archive browse creation, automatically generating browse resolution copies of clips as the high resolution versions are archived. The Flashbrowse 3 interface, which is an extension of the new FlashNet GUI, allows operators to instigate restores or partial file restores directly from their browser window.

Doug Wynn, SGL’s VP Sales Americas says, “We are delighted to make these announcements at NAB. The team at SGL is dedicated to simplifying and speeding up procedures for our customers’ thereby reducing archive and restore times and increasing ROI.”
