NAB 2012: Snell Ramps Up Momentum

Snell has launched Momentum, a new system for media asset management (MAM), workflow automation, and resource planning. Snell says that Momentum delivers maximum control and flexibility to media and broadcast operators, enabling them to reduce operational costs by allocating resources more efficiently and making content more accessible.

“Efficient workflow management is a critical factor for the success of today’s broadcast and media operations as they tackle the requirements of ‘TV Everywhere’ delivery to the full range of distribution platforms and consumer devices, and we’ve solved this workflow challenge with Momentum,” said Neil Maycock, chief architect at Snell. “Momentum aggregates MAM, workflow automation, and resource management to provide a unified platform from which all elements within a production workflow can be easily managed, from media assets to technical resources, such as editing suites and other applications.”

Momentum employs thin-client service oriented architecture (SOA) to control a suite of proprietary and third-party applications running on various hardware platforms. Through a single unified interface, operations staff can access the system’s MAM, workflow automation, and resource management tools to perform complex production tasks involving different departments and personnel such as production managers, administration staff, journalists, and editors. Users can define workflows and allocate available resources to orchestrate content processes from ingest to delivery, and they can instantly find media assets, catalog them, and configure their metadata. Momentum’s business analytics tools provide a complete and transparent picture of all operations with access to real-time information and simulated scenarios, giving operators the analysis and instant reporting they need to make strategic decisions and speed time to revenue.

Within Momentum, each workflow is represented with a powerful and easy-to-use node diagram. Users with appropriate access rights can design and implement custom workflows that not only map directly to corresponding production processes, but also control third-party applications and automate repetitive tasks, in turn freeing up huge amounts of operators’ time. Users can monitor each scheduled or running process, such as transcoding or metadata manipulation, and receive reports and notifications regarding its status. Momentum manages content through quality control, editing, and transcoding to ensure that content is delivered on time and in the appropriate standard via appropriate file transfer protocols.

For MAM needs, Momentum’s tools enable users to find media assets instantly through federated search, an album of content, and a content genealogy tree management system that conveys the connected metadata. The system automatically extracts and captures industry-standard metadata and adds manually customized metadata or template-based metadata schemas. Easy-to-use tools for metadata, thumbnail, and proxy creation help to streamline content searches. Production staff can then edit, consolidate, and process the content through quality control and transcoding for final delivery.

“Momentum encapsulates Snell’s extensive knowledge of the broadcast industry and wealth of software development experience to give our customers an enterprise solution for their evolving technical, operational, and business requirements,” said Maycock. “In particular, the solution is geared towards simplifying the migration of tapeless processes to nonlinear workflows, thus empowering customers to take full advantage of modern production processes carried out through sharing of multimedia content on tapeless platforms. Momentum provides a flexible, controllable, and secure production flow that ensures the readiness, quality, and necessary format of multimedia content generated for each specific application and each distribution platform.”
