NAB Perspectives: For EditShare’s Jeff Barnes, New Features Are as Critical as New Products

Although the NAB Show is a classic launch pad for technology companies’ big new products, EditShare Product Specialist Jeff Barnes believes that it’s important to take care of those end users that have made large investments with his company.

“You get to the point where you do big product, big product, year after year,” he says. “At some point, you have so many things that it becomes important to start adding some really nice features that end users want. That’s the maturity of the company: we’re adding, adding, adding for users that bought a big expensive system. Constantly rolling in new things for those who invested in our system is the goal.”

In line with that philosophy, EditShare is unveiling new Shared Storage capabilities and systems at the NAB Show this week. EditShare networked storage solutions now support project sharing for the brand-new Adobe CS6 Premiere Pro.

What the company can do for the sports market on the ingest and shared-storage level is demonstrated through the Pittsburgh Penguins’ use of EditShare’s system.

“[The Penguins] do as much postproduction during the non-game days as they do live production,” says Barnes, “and what we do is mix those two together in a very seamless way.

EditShare’s system offers the Penguins a multicamera, six-angle edit-while-capture ingest workflow so editors can cut highlights in Apple Final Cut for the in-game scoreboard at Consol Energy Center. EditShare uses a mixed EVS workflow to accomplish that.

“On non-game days, our Flow asset management does a lot of low-res–proxy workflow for the day-to-day,” says Barnes. “So marketing material get cut on non-game days. Our solution helps you out on game day and non-game day for postproduction when it comes to sports.”

EditShare is also showcasing a new version of EditShare Ark, the company’s scalable backup and archiving solution. The new release of Ark features an enhanced user interface that better displays important information about system status and performance. For the first time, Ark administrators can migrate media between different tiers of online, nearline “spinning disk,” and offline tape storage.

The integration between Ark and Flow, EditShare’s production-asset–management solution, has also been significantly expanded. Through the Flow interface, authorized users can now delete unneeded backups at the clip level and partially restore files from Ark disk to EditShare Media Spaces, changing wrappers and codecs in the process.
