Fairlight Offers Free Access to Dream Software

Australian DAW manufacturer Fairlight has quietly but steadily been making inroads into U.S. sports-broadcast postproduction. In addition to implementing several of its Evo production systems at NFL Films, it has installed systems for MLB, NBA, NBC Sports, NASCAR, Golf Channel, and others.

The common thread, says Fairlight President Steve Rance, has been the need for ever increasing speed to fill the expanding number of hours of non-live sports programming.

“What’s especially important,” he says, “has been the need to quickly access and clean up archival video and film and make it look and sound compatible with contemporary video.”

Fairlight has made some new-product announcements at the NAB Show, including the upcoming release of Version 4 of its Dream console software, which will incorporate such features as an integrated sampler designed for postproduction, mouse-based–editing enhancements, a dedicated single-screen GUI design for compact installations, and improved dynamics attack range, plus side-chains and MaxLinking across groups.

But Fairlight has also embarked on a “freemium” strategy to introduce the company’s products to a new generation of users, offering free versions of its Solo mouse-based editing program for educational and evaluation purposes.

“The features will be identical to that of Crystal Core-based systems,” says Rance, “but on a limited scale in terms of tracks and mixing capability.”
