EVP of Engineering Rômulo Pontual oversees DIRECTV’s technology strategy.

“From our exclusive NFL Sunday Ticket to our interactive platforms for major golf and tennis events to our PlayerTracker and ScoreGuide app, DIRECTV has led the industry in innovative sports programming,” says Pontual. “And we continue to reinvigorate the viewing experience for our customers with plans to offer more programming on multiple screens both inside and outside the home as we explore new frontiers of video technology.”

At DIRECTV, he oversees technology strategy from the satellite fleet to consumer equipment, including new service technologies to enhance the customer experience.

Pontual, who started working on a solution to expand the company’s HD offering in early 2003, has successfully led efforts to expand satellite capacity using Ka band and introduce the required new technologies for high definition. In addition, he also led the company to streamlined set-top-box implementations, resulting in significant cost reductions while enabling widespread and rapid introduction of new features and interactive services.

Prior to joining DIRECTV in 2004, Pontual was EVP, technology, of News Corp., playing a key role in standardizing set-top-box specifications across the various satellite platforms owned and managed by the company and providing technical guidance for numerous worldwide initiatives to the company’s other senior executives. Prior to joining News Corp. in 1996, he was responsible for satellite engineering at SES in Luxembourg.

Pontual graduated in electrical engineering in the field of satellite communications from the Universidade Federal Fluminense and Pontificia Universidade Católica do Rio de Janeiro. Born and reared in Brazil, he now lives with his wife and two sons in New York.

Besides Pontual’s keynote speech, the FutureSPORT Summit will feature a series of in-depth technology overviews and panels, offering attendees invaluable insight into future technology trends and how they are impacting today’s sports-production scene. Topics will include new design philosophies for the “Truck of the Future,” sports graphics, next-generation high-speed cameras, signal transport and routing, 4K acquisition, and the evolving 3D production model.

FutureSPORT is sponsored by Sony (Title); Bexel (Diamond); exhibiting sponsors Cobalt Digital, Evertz, Haivision, and Ross Video; and session sponsor Signiant.
