SMT Wraps Up Second Season of Triple Crown Coverage

SMT, a provider of data integration, graphics presentation, and video enhancement solutions to live sports television, completes its second season supporting NBC Sports Group’s broadcast of the Triple Crown this weekend at the Belmont Stakes.

From Belmont Park on Saturday, SMT’s technology will again provide television viewers visual cues and real-time statistical information to enhance the entertainment value of NBC Sports Group’s comprehensive coverage.

“SMT will certainly bring its A-game for this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity,” said Don Tupper, vice president of business development at SMT. “We hope to culminate another Triple Crown season assisting NBC Sports Group with not only another successful and innovative execution, but also a historic Triple Crown winner.”

Just as the horses must adapt to three different track conditions and three different race distances over the course of the Triple Crown, SMT’s solution normalizes a slew of variables for each race; for instance, integrating three different tele-timer feed and tote providers for split and finish times that serve as the official scoreboard at each track.

SMT’s suite of products provided during the Belmont Stakes includes:

SMT’s Live Leaderboard System will show the running order of the top six horses based on data received from Belmont Park’s real-time horse tracking system. This positional data updates 30 times per second for each horse and gives SMT’s on-air graphic presentation unprecedented speed and accuracy.

SMT’s ISO Track System will allow the broadcaster to identify, point to, and visually track two horses simultaneously both live and in replay.  In addition, live data associated with a tracked horse (e.g., speed, current standing and distance from the finish line) can be displayed and will update on-air in real-time

SMT’s Autograph Ticker will produce a continually updating on-air display of real-time odds and payouts for bets on each horse via live data from each facilities Tote provider (in-house wagering system).  SMT’s ticker will also include social media feeds from Twitter and Facebook, allowing viewers, broadcast team members, jockeys and other race participants to provide insight, breaking news and behind-the-scenes access.

SMT’s SMART System will virtually insert “distance to the finish” indicators on the track surface at 200, 100 and 50 yards out, showing viewers how much track real estate is left as the horses head to the finish line.

SMT’s Track Map System will show the real-time position and split times of the lead horse on a graphical representation of the track.

SMT’s Data Matrix (DMX) Switchboard has been custom designed for the Triple Crown to absorb, collate and synchronize multiple on-site live data feeds into a proprietary SMT Live Horse Racing database. SMT’s DMX integrates live data and time-code synchronized data into a mix of on-air and off-air graphics displays both in real-time and replay modes.

The NBC Sports Group’s coverage of the 144th Belmont Stakes in Elmont, NY, begins today, Thursday on NBC Sports Network, with NBC’s coverage of Saturday’s headline race running from 4:30 to 7 PM.
