Harmonic Powers First Public MPEG-DASH Trial During London Olympics

Harmonic, a provider of video delivery infrastructure, is providing live encoding for the world`s first large-scale, live, public trial of Dynamic Adaptive Streaming over HTTP, known as MPEG-DASH, during the London Olympics.

Belgian public broadcaster VRT is using Harmonic`s ProMedia Live transcoder, together with equipment provided by other DASH Promoters Group members, to offer its audience the chance to experience the Olympic Games broadcast on their laptops, smartphones and tablets via the MPEG-DASH advanced adaptive bitrate streaming protocol.

In addition to this ground-breaking MPEG-DASH demonstration, Harmonic equipment is bringing home the games through broadcast, cable and multiscreen installations at the BBC, Virgin Media and NBC respectively. Farther afield, Harmonic gear is used by many of the regional Olympics broadcasters including Sky Italia, TV Azteca in Mexico, NRK in Norway and SRG-SSR in Switzerland.

Harmonic is also working closely with broadcasters across Europe to develop their MPEG-DASH-based multiscreen service offerings. For more information on Harmonic and its solutions visit www.harmonicinc.com.
