Campus Clips: ESPN’s Burke Magnus, CBS’s Craig Silver Honored by National Football Foundation; NCAA Golf Championships to Return to Golf Channel

The National Football Foundation (NFF) recognized Burke Magnus, ESPN senior vice president for college programing and Craig Silver, CBS coordinating producer for college football, with NFF Legacy Awards during the 55th NFF Annual Awards Dinner on Dec. 4 at the Waldorf-Astoria in New York City. Magnus, a leader in expanding ESPN’s coverage of college football during the past decade, has become a major advocate for the NFF and its efforts to promote the good in the game as a member of the NFF Awards Committee and the board of directors for the new College Football Hall of Fame in Atlanta. Silver, among the best producers in the business, has continuously ensured coverage of the NFF’s efforts on CBS, most notably for the NFF Scholar-Athlete Awards and the NFF Hall of Fame On-Campus Salutes…

…Golf Channel and the NCAA jointly announced the return of the NCAA Division I Men’s and Women’s Golf Championships to television beginning in 2014 with the Division I Men’s Golf Championship at Prairie Dunes Country Club, in Hutchinson, Kan. Golf Channel is scheduled to air three days of action from the 2014 men’s championship. Hosted by Wichita State University, the 2014 NCAA Division I Men’s Golf Championship begins with 30 teams and six student-athletes competing over 54 holes, an individual champion will be crowned before the top eight teams advance to the final three rounds of match play competition for the team championship. Through a multi-year partnership with the NCAA, Golf Channel will air tournament action from both the NCAA Division I Men’s and Women’s Golf Championships beginning in 2015. The 2015 championships are scheduled to be contested at The Concession Golf Club in Bradenton, Fla., and hosted by the University of South Florida. The 2015 championships will mark the first time since 1997 the NCAA Division I Women’s Golf Championship will air live on television…

…In ongoing conference realignment news, the Big East’s seven Catholic schools — DePaul, St. John’s, Seton Hall, Marquette, Villanova, Providence, and Georgetown – announced they were leaving the collapsing conference. Also, Monmouth University and Quinnipiac University have both agreed to join the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) beginning in July of 2013.

According to a study by OnlineDegrees.org, 53% of college students own a smartphone, with 44% of those students seeking sports news on their devices. In addition, 40% of students prefer to read their news content in an App, as opposed to the 27% who use a mobile news site or 34% who had no preference…

…The Colonial Athletic Association reached a three-year agreement with the City of Baltimore for 1st Mariner Arena to host the conference’s Men’s Basketball Championship beginning in 2014. The CAA Tournament has been hosted at the Richmond Coliseum in Richmond, VA since 1990…

…Minnesota State Moorhead is starting to use the Square Wallet mobile app, which allows customers to set up an electronic tab to buy concessions. That means no cash, no credit or debit card. The school started using the Square Register app, which allows a business to accept electronic payment, during the fall season. That gave fans the option to use credit cards to purchase concessions. Before that, it was cash only. Adding the Square wallet app, which is used in conjunction with Square Register, takes it a step further. Fans that have the wallet app can use their smart phones to make purchases…
