NFL Network Puts New Orleans Front and Center

The NFL Network is wrapping up a week of wall-to-wall Super Bowl programming with shows Total Access, Super Bowl Live, NFL AM, and First on the Field and various live news hits from across New Orleans, giving hardcore football fans more than their fill of Super Bowl coverage. And, although this is the seventh time a Super Bowl has been played in the Crescent City, it marks the first time NFL Network has had a presence at one.

“New Orleans has done this before, and it has also rebuilt itself, is on the rise and on a resurgence,” says Glenn Adamo, VP, broadcasting, production, and media operations, NFL. “And it’s noticeable that the people are going to make this work and they know what works.”

NFL Network is relying heavily on Game Creek Video for its productions across the city. Glory is on hand at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome for all the action on Saturday and Sunday, and both Pride and Clipper are located at the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center for various press conferences and media events. (Clipper will move to the Art Galleria on Saturday night to produce the NFL Honors broadcast). And Game Creek Northstar is at the Gazebo in Woldenberg Park, the primary outside site used by the network. A Satlink satellite uplink truck is located at each of the two team hotels.

“The beauty of New Orleans, like Indianapolis last year, is the close proximity of the different venues and the ability to easily get from one to the other,” says Dave Shaw, director of technical operations, NFL Network. “There is a lot of sharing of equipment and people, and that has been very advantageous for us.”

An example of the flexibility took place Wednesday morning when a storm descended on New Orleans. The Coaches Show and Total Access were easily moved from the Gazebo set to the convention-center location.

“We have a lot of fiber and redundancy between the locations,” says Shaw, noting, “Level 3 has a huge presence here and between our master control in Atlanta; Culver City, CA; and NFL Films.”

During the week, the primary locations have been the Total Access set at the Superdome and the media center at the convention center.
