Campus Clips: KTSF to Air USF-Gonzaga in Mandarin Chinese; Patriot League All-Access to Stream Swimming Championships

In partnership with the University of San Francisco and the West Coast Conference, KTSF Television, the largest Asian-broadcast station in the United States, will televise the men’s basketball game between the USF and Gonzaga live from War Memorial Gymnasium on Feb. 16. Tip-off is set for 1:30 p.m.

The telecast is believed to be the first NCAA college basketball game to be broadcast live in Mandarin-Chinese. Veteran Chinese sportscaster and KTSF news reporters John Lee and former Taiwan national team player and five-time Jones Cup International All-Star Job Hung will call the action from courtside.

The Chinese broadcast will also be carried live in Seattle (KFFV) and on a delayed basis in New York on WMBC. The game will also be streamed live on smartphones and tablets in the Bay Area, via the free Syncbak app, which is available for download on iTunes or GooglePlay. The game will also be aired on the Time Warner Cable SportsNet, Comcast SportsNet, and ROOT Sports as the West Coast Conference Game of the Week.

Central to KTSF’s decision to broadcast the game was the local Chinese community’s interest in Tao Xu, USF’s 6-foot-11 freshman center who is from Qingdao City in China, and is unison with USF’s concerted marketing efforts to the Chinese community in San Francisco…

… Big 12 Commissioner Bob Bowlsby says the league likely will seek permission from the NCAA to hold a championship game even though it doesn’t have the 12 members required under the current rules…

… Northwestern and the Chicago Cubs announced a five-year partnership this week, linking the athletic and marketing arms of NU and the Cubs through 2017. The deal creates cross-promotional opportunities for each organization, and NU will be using Wrigley Field for multiple sporting events, including five future football games…

…Mountain West Conference Commissioner Craig Thompson commented on BYU’s status by saying they have no indication of abandoning their football independence or the West Coast Conference. BYU will likely never join a conference for football unless they are forced to. With the main goal being exposure and money, neither of which the Mountain West currently has at the liking of BYU. However, the only league that BYU could possibly join is the Mountain West, because the Pac-12 wants nothing to do with BYU and the Big 12 has given up on BYU. The only option left is the Mountain West, so that will likely be their landing spot, if they ever need to find a spot.
