Campus Clips: Big East, NBC Sports Closing in on Rights Deal; Army Adding LED Video Board at Tate Rink

Rumored for much of the week, the Big East continues to close in on a potential television rights deal with NBC Sports. According to the Associated Press, two people familiar with the deal say the Big East is closing in on a six-year contract with NBC Sports Network for football and basketball rights that will pay the conference about $20 million per year. The people spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because negotiations weren’t being made public. One person said the deal would likely be announced within the next two weeks. The Big East first has to go through the process of allowing ESPN, which currently holds the conference’s football TV rights, to match the offer…

…Army is adding a nearly 13-feet by 23-feet video board at Tate Rink, home to the Black Knights ice hockey team. Daktronics has been chosen to add the new LED video display system and it will be installed before the current hockey season is complete. Measuring 12-feet, 5-inches high by 23 feet wide, the board will be hung in the South end of Tate Rink near the Zamboni entrance. The display will have 384 lines and 704 columns of resolution…

Using archived video to engage fans, the ACC Digital Network launched Dunkuary, a month-long competition with the goal of mobilizing fans from the 12 ACC schools to vote in order to determine the best dunk in the ACC’s 60-year history.  Each day, during the ACC Digital Network’s live daily show, ACC Live, a pair of #dunkuary nominees will be unveiled, with a different team revealed each weekday in alphabetical order by school. On Feb. 27 at noon ET the ACC Digital Network will feature a special edition of ACC Live with a Dunkuary Selection and Bracket Announcement show. The Dunkuary Bracket will feature the winning dunk from each ACC school with four wildcards chosen by the one-man selection committee, the host of the ACC Digital Network, Jeff Fischel.  From then and through Monday, March 11, fans will vote through each round of Dunkuary culminating on the final voting competition which will ultimately determine the best dunk in ACC History, as chosen by the fans…

…Athletic directors, who met in Chicago the past two days, agreed that the number of conference football games should increase from the current eight per season to either nine or 10 starting as early as 2014 when Rutgers and Maryland join the league. That action, if eventually approved by league presidents, also could affect Big Ten nonconference scheduling agreements already set with high-profile opponents such as Oregon, Texas, Tennessee and Oklahoma. The other major change is Commissioner Jim Delany telling those in attendance he won’t interfere with Big Ten schools who want to schedule night games in November. There is no policy banning such games, but schools have shown little interest in it…

…UMass-Lowell has accepted an invitation to join the America East Conference and move its entire program to the Division I level. The River Hawks has 17 athletic teams and will add men’s and women’s lacrosse. The school fills the void left in the AE when Boston University announces its departure for the Patriot League…

… The University of Richmond men’s lacrosse team will join the Atlantic Sun as an affiliate member when the squad begins Division I play in the spring of 2014, the athletic department announced on Monday…

…The Western Athletic Conference announced that an invitation for affiliate membership has been issued to and accepted by North Dakota to join the conference in baseball starting with the 2013-14 academic year.
