Ratings Roundup: Devils, Rangers Red-Hot on MSG Networks

MSG’s NHL coverage is enjoying a banner year thus far during the lockout-shortened season. Last Saturday’s MSG+ telecast of the New Jersey Devils vs. Pittsburgh Penguins registered a 1.25 Nielsen household rating, the network’s highest Devils HH rating since March 10, 2010 (vs. Rangers: 1.35). Through 10 games this season, the average household rating for Devils telecasts is up 143% compared to the 2011-12 season (0.56 vs. 0.23).

Meanwhile, Rangers telecasts have averaged a 1.95 Nielsen household rating through 11 games on MSG and MSG+, up 187% compared to the first 11 games of the 2011-12 regular season (0.68 HH) and up 97% compared to the 2011-12 season final average (0.99 HH)…

…Believe it or not, 43,000 viewers watched “NFL Gamecenter” on NFL Network during the Super Bowl last Sunday. ESPN, meanwhile, earned between 86,000 and 168,000 viewers for a marathon of “World’s Strongest Man” during the game, and ESPN2 attracted 94,000 for live coverage of the Carribean World Series…

CBS earned a 28.7 final rating and 63.4 million viewers for Super Bowl postgame coverage down 15% in ratings and 18% in viewership from coverage on NBC last year, which ended nearly an hour earlier (33.7, 76.8M), and up 1% and down 4%, respectively, from coverage on FOX in 2011 (28.4, 66.0M). On cable, the postgame edition of “NFL Primetime” drew a 1.3 and 2.2 million on ESPN — down 19% and 16%, respectively, from last year (1.6, 2.7M) — and “NFL Gameday Final” scored a 0.4 and 681,000 on NFL Network…

…The thrilling five-overtime Louisville/Notre Dame men’s college basketball game on Feb. 9 earned a 1.3 U.S. rating and 2.0 million viewers on ESPN — down 19% in ratings and 31% in viewership from Kentucky/Vanderbilt last year (1.6, 2.9M)…

…ESPN Deportes’ coverage of the Caribbean World Series (16 games, Feb 1-7), averaging a 1.1 Hispanic household coverage rating, a 38% increase from last year, with 77,000 Hispanic viewers (+P2). The final game played on February 7 between Mexico and the Dominican Republic was the longest game in the history of the Series and ESPN Deportes’ most-watched Caribbean Series game ever among Hispanic households. The eight-hour long final delivered a 1.8 Hispanic HH rating with 100,000 HH impressions and 114,000 Hispanic viewers – replacing the previous high Mexico vs. Venezuela game on Feb. 6, 2009 that delivered 91,000 HH impressions…

…The Dallas Mavericks are averaging a 1.7 rating through 46 games on Fox Sports Southwest. That’s down 44% from 3.0 in last year’s shortened season through 46 games. The Stars, meanwhile, are averaging a 1.0 through

…Through 50 games this season, the Warriors on Comcast SportsNet Bay Area are averaging a 2.68 household rating, which is equal to an estimated 67,132 households in the San Francisco DMA (San Francisco/Oakland/San Jose) watching per game, That is up 49% over the 1.80 average household rating posted at the end of the 2011-12 season.The December 22 Warriors/Lakers game registered a season-high 4.99 average household rating (approx. 124,850 households) – the highest rated Warriors game since the 07-08 season (3/24/08, Warriors/Lakers 5.73).
