UNCW Production Incorporates Video Technology into 'Midsummer'

StarNewsOnline.com reports that the University of North Carolina Wilmington (UNCW) Department of Theatre presents “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” Feb. 14-24 at the Cultural Arts Building theater, the stage will be practically barren.

No papier-mache rocks. No aluminum trees. No cardboard moon suspended from a string.

Director Andy Belser has brought in longtime collaborators Randy Ward and John Ambrosone to design the set and lights for the production, and they’re presenting Shakespeare’s comedy using 21st-century technology.

Without tangible objects on stage, how will the setting be established?

“Actors and light and images,” said Ward, who worked with Belser for years on The Gravity Project theater company at Juniata College in Pennsylvania.

Images will be projected from behind and in front of the performers, creating a visual spectacle.
