Sonic Notify Awarded U.S. Patent for its Audio Technology That Delivers Digital Content via Sound Waves

The following Press Release was issued by Sonic Notify on Friday, April 12:

NEW YORK – Sonic Notify today announces that the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) has awarded the company Patent No. 8,401,569 for its audio watermarking technology. The patent gives Sonic Notify the ability to be an exclusive in-store and TV broadcaster of ultra high frequency technology with a constant data stream embedded in audio.

This patent safeguards Sonic Notify in the always-evolving space of mobile advertising. The company’s audio watermarking technology uses data-rich sound waves unparalleled by any other audio-based content technology, enabling brands to push targeted content to specific groups by location, experience or event. What’s more, Sonic Notify’s platform is the only one that can enable out-of-the-box live content delivery on TV today.

For example, brands using Sonic Notify’s technology can send content to particular consumers standing in front of a shelf at a retail store, on the couch in front of their TV, or in the audience at a concert, without any action needed on the consumer’s part. The experience is seamless; a consumer’s phone can buzz in his pocket or on the table next to the couch and deliver content in real time. With the patent, Sonic Notify is well-positioned to build market leadership in a new form of marketing by delivering inaudible data-packed sound waves to consumers’ mobile devices based on their location. Plus, it represents one of the most ubiquitous and easy to deploy solutions of its type, working across 100 percent of all iOS and Android devices.

“This patent allows us to pioneer the next big thing in digital marketing, changing the way brands connect with consumers in physical locations,” said Jonathan Glanz, CEO and co-founder of Sonic Notify. “Say I’m standing in Walgreens contemplating what type of cereal to buy—now, Kellogg’s can send me an offer that shouts, ‘Pick me!’ over other brands.”

About Patent No. 8,401,569

The patent specifically refers to the encoding process that Sonic Notify uses in the ultra high frequency space and secures the Intellectual Property (IP) it has developed. The IP allows for dramatically increased throughput in the ultra high frequency spectrum with almost negligible false positives and a robustness not seen in other audio technologies.
Sonic Notify’s patent also includes the following:

  • System (which includes a sound device, smart phone and processor) effective to encode a signal and provide content to a user
  • System effective to decode a signal and provide content to a user
  • Device effective to encode a signal and to provide content to a user

Sonic Notify’s SDK currently operates on all iOS and Android devices. To learn more about the technology and medium-specific solutions, please visit www.sonicnotify.com.
