SMT, Live Media Group Partner for Live Stream of The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug World Premiere

SMT, the leading provider of data integration, graphics presentation, and video enhancement solutions to live sports and entertainment television, partnered with Live Media Group, producers of the worldwide premiere webcast for Warner Bros. Pictures’ The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug. SMT provided social media data integration for the film studio’s live stream of the world premiere.

The red carpet event featured the cast and crew from The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, the highly anticipated second film in Peter Jackson’s epic trilogy adapting the enduringly popular masterpiece The Hobbit, by J.R.R. Tolkien. The Hobbit series is a prequel to The Lord of the Rings trilogy that Academy Award-winning filmmaker Peter Jackson brought to the silver screen several years ago. The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug will go into general release in theaters across the United States at midnight on Thursday, Dec. 12.

“We look forward to working with Warner Bros. at the premiere of The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, one of the biggest films of this holiday season,” said Ben Hayes, SMT account manager, prior to the webcast. “The show’s hosts using our GOTO board will be on set on Hollywood Boulevard, enabling fans to join in the excitement of the premiere through social media posts. Our Twitter crawl will provide an additional layer of social media input for viewers worldwide to enjoy while watching this major studio event.”

For the premiere, SMT provided its signature GOTO interactive touchscreen that combines real-time live data, graphics, and video integration. Content submitted by viewers through Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram was reviewed and selected by SMT and displayed in three separate screens on the GOTO board during the live stream. The hosts manipulated tablets directly connected to the GOTO board to see what was on display and chose which posts to highlight. The board was designed by (n+1) designstudio, a creative services firm providing motion graphic design and conceptual branding solutions for the sports and entertainment industries that is a division of SMT.

SMT gathered the data for the GOTO through its Data Matrix Switchboard (DMX) and social media publisher. The DMX serves as the core data integration layer, as it aggregates and parses multiple social media data streams. With the social media publisher, SMT can search the three social media sites in real-time and relay approved content.

Additionally, SMT provided an onscreen Twitter crawl at the bottom of the viewing screen. The steady stream of tweets was updated constantly with no repeats. With viewers from across the globe being able to submit content, SMT reviewed the tweets for best quality and appropriate standards before including them in the crawl. SMT coordinated the use of these products with Warner Bros. and met other specific needs as designated during the live stream.
