Behind the Mic: Injured Vonn Joins NBC for Sochi Games; After Short NBC Stint, Beadle Back to ESPN

Gold-medal alpine skier Lindsey Vonn will join NBC as an Olympics correspondent for the Today show and NBC Sports during the 2014 Winter Olympics. In her new role, Vonn will report daily from the U.S. for Today and will contribute to NBC Sports Olympics coverage. During the days leading up to the Opening Ceremony, Vonn will report live for Today from Studio 1A. She will cover how the athletes prepare physically and mentally for the Games and will share some of her favorite memories. After the official start of the Olympics, she will continue her reporting for Today and NBC Sports from the U.S….

…Michelle Beadle is heading back to ESPN, according to SI.com. The NBC Sports host and Access Hollywood correspondent will return to the network where she enjoyed success as the co-host of SportsNation. Beadle left ESPN for NBC in May 2012 and did so on exceptionally good terms, a clear prelude to her returning now. Look for her to ultimately host or co-host a New York-based show with another ESPN talent at some point. There is a chance she could appear on SportsNation initially as well, although no ESPN start date is set yet. Beadle can officially leave NBC Sports in early March, according to SI.com…

…Regis Philbin is stepping back from his duties at Fox Sports 1. Sports Illustrated reports that Philbin will take a month off from Crowd Goes Wild in February, before returning with a limited schedule in March. Philbin, of course, has been with the show since the network launched last year…

…Longtime Red Sox broadcaster Jerry Remy, who has been on a leave of absence since his son Jared was arrested and charged with murdering girlfriend Jennifer Martel in August, said Monday that he will return to the booth this season. Remy said he would not address his situation during the Red Sox’ first broadcast this season, acknowledging that the reason he was speaking now was hopefully to prevent its being a story in spring training…

…72-year-old Tim McCarver, who ended his record-setting 34-year run as a network baseball analyst by broadcasting the World Series last October on Fox, has reached an agreement to do about 30 Cardinals games this season for Fox Sports Midwest. The agreement follows the announcement earlier this month that Cards radio broadcaster Mike Shannon will drop about 50 road games from his workload. FSM analysts Al Hrabosky and Rick Horton are to replace Shannon, 74, on a rotating basis on those radio broadcasts. That makes it easy to add McCarver to the TV side…

…NBC Sports Group has inked deals with motorsports reporters Marty Snider and Kelli Stavast to cover NASCAR studio and live race coverage on NBC and NBCSN. Snider and Stavast will operate out of Charlotte, NC, home to many of the sport’s race teams and drivers. The appointments of Snider and Stavast follow previous NBC Sports NASCAR on-air announcements pertaining to new lead race announcer Rick Allen and analysts Jeff Burton and Steve Letarte. There are no further broadcaster-related announcements expected in the near term…

…New ESPN analyst Tim Tebow will cross over to ABC News’ Good Morning America, co-hosting the morning show Friday with the GMA anchor team, according to the Hollywood Reporter. Tebow, who had been a favorite topic at Disney-owned ESPN during his final tumultuous seasons in the NFL, landed a job at ESPN in December…

…Tim Ryan will serve as the new color analyst for the San Francisco 49ers’ radio broadcast alongside play-by-play man Ted Robinson. Ryan served as the color analyst for the 49ers preseason television broadcast each of the past three seasons and currently serves as a Westwood One Radio analyst…

…SiriusXM has announced that filmmaker and Knicks fan Spike Lee will host a show exclusively on the new SiriusXM NBA Radio, channel 217. Spike Lee’s Best Seat in the House debuted yesterday (7-8 p.m. ET) and will air every other week featuring Lee discussing the headline stories from the NBA and talking with prominent personalities from basketball and entertainment. In addition to the SiriusXM NBA Radio show, he will host a non-sports show airing every other week on SiriusXM. On this program, he will sit down for long-form interviews with personalities from the worlds of entertainment, politics, music, and more.
