8,000 Production Pros Benefit from Sports Production Safety Group Programs

With the cameraman’s attention focused on getting the perfect shot of a Hail Mary pass, one step too far can lead to a serious injury.  Not only is the safety of the production crew at stake, but network, league and venue executives must worry about potential broadcast disruptions, insurance liability, lawsuits, and more.

Sports production professionals are faced with many risks from one production to the next.  But with the help of Sports Production Safety Group (SPSG), 8,000 professionals are reducing their risk of injury on the job by completing SPSG’s free online safety training courses.

Health and safety experts from CBS Sports, Fox, NBC Universal, ESPN and Turner formed SPSG in 2007 by to improve health and safety for sports production crews and create a standard industry-wide training program.

In 2013, SPSG expanded its online program to nine courses, covering subjects such as fall prevention, hearing conservation, scaffolding and aerial platforms.  New in 2014, SPSG offers an official safety credential to professionals who complete all assigned courses.

Networks hiring any freelance, temporary or permanent member of a production crew who has the SPSG safety credential can feel confident that the worker has received adequate and consistent safety training. SPSG also offers a venue portal to help production crews familiarize themselves with venues and identify potential hazards.

Most importantly, all of SPSG’s courses, credentials and resources are free to qualified sports production professionals.
