Nila LEDs Light the 2014 NBA D-League Showcase

The 2014 NBA D-League Showcase was held in the Reno Event Center in Reno, Nevada, with a schedule of 17 games played over a 5-day period from January 5th through January 9. Nila, a manufacturer of LED fixtures for the Broadcast and Film industries, was invited to replace the existing tungsten and metal halide lights for this event.

Since the existing luminaires produced uneven output with only 25-55 foot-candle lighting, it was very difficult for the fans to see all of the action and for the players to operate at peak performance. In addition, a significant lighting improvement was necessary for the NBA network and CBS Sports to broadcast the event in HD.

Nila replaced the traditional lighting with 115 Nila Sports Light 25 (SL25) producing an even, 60 foot-candles over the entire court floor. The SL25s were placed in a grid system 85′ above the court floor and were balanced to only 15-46% intensity for maximum effect. Moreover, they utilized fewer than 11,000 watts for a reduction of 80% in energy consumption over the traditional light sources.

Jim Sanfilippo, Nila’s CEO stated that “it was a thrill to take on this challenge since we recognized that the SL25 was a far better solution in terms of a more enjoyable fan experience with a far better broadcast quality while also providing a substantial savings in energy consumption.”

Overall, the Nila Sports Light 25 LED fixtures met and exceeded all of the requirements for this event. The fans were treated with clear viewing, the players enjoyed better visibility and the HD broadcasting was razor sharp with a far better color rendering of the player’s uniforms. As the NBA’s consulting lighting designer, Karen Goldstick, commented; “I was very impressed with the quantity and quality of the light… With the added control and energy savings this is an improvement on every level.”
