MLB Taking Hi-Tech Approach to Video Replays

NYDailyNews.com reports that the Replay Operation Center, housed in the Chelsea offices of MLB’s Advanced Media division, is where replay officials — members of rotating umpiring crews — will pore over video to resolve challenged calls. They will have 15 or so camera angles to consult.

In a room on the fifth floor of a refurbished former Nabisco factory Wednesday, 37 sleek HD monitors glowed with varying camera angles and views of baseball plays. The guts of Major League Baseball’s new instant-replay system were on display for reporters, and the place seemed so space-age that one baseball official quipped, “It looks like NASA in here.”

Perhaps that’s appropriate, considering this new system means the national pastime is going where the national pastime has not gone before. Expanded replay, which goes beyond homers to include tag plays, force plays and a host of others, may not be the game’s final frontier, but it certainly will be a big storyline for baseball all season.
