Campus Clips: Northeastern Unionization Ruling Poised to Impact Industry?; St. Cloud State, St. Bonaventure Earn Video Award Honors

Last month, a regional director of the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) ruled that scholarship football players at Northwestern are employees of the university and thus have a right to unionize and fight for better health care coverage, larger scholarship funds and other benefits (Kain Colter, the former Northwestern quarterback leading the school’s union charge, says ”pay-for-play” salaries are not on the agenda). Time Magazine gives its take on what this ruling means for college sports going forward…According to Ken Reed, a sports policy director, the concept of universities cutting paychecks to college athletes is a complex one, one that could have numerous ramifications, including unknown effects for female athletes under Title IX and male athletes in so-called minor sports. However, if the ruling survives all the legal challenges to come, there are several relatively straightforward items that a Northwestern players’ union — or a potential athletes’ union at any university — could bring to the bargaining table quickly.
