Venue News: 49ers Cut Ribbon on Levi’s Stadium; Red Wings Release Design for Proposed Arena

There were actually three ribbons to be cut on Thursday afternoon at Levi’s Stadium. So many different people helped the San Francisco 49ers find their new Santa Clara home that one just wouldn’t have done it. Leaders from the 49ers (team CEO Jed York), the NFL (commissioner Roger Goodell), the city of Santa Clara (Mayor Jamie Matthews) as well as many of the stadium’s construction workers celebrated the official unveiling in unison. As a group, they delivered California’s first pro football stadium since 1967. …Detroit’s Joe Louis Arena, the fourth-oldest arena in the NHL, is one step closer to closing its doors to the Red Wings, writes The Sporting News. The Ilitch family, which currently own the Red Wings, Tigers, and Little Caesers pizza chain, announced on Sunday its updated plans for an upcoming arena as a new home for the team, and plans for the area around it. Set to hold 20,000 fans, the arena will be one of the first to use a “deconstructed design,” where not only offices but also concession stands and apparel shops surround the stadium in separate structures…

…After 19 years of dead ends, the NFL is taking another run at returning to Los Angeles, according to the Los Angeles Times. Solving that riddle will require some creative thinking and possibly an outside-the-box approach. The league is evaluating various sites in the L.A. area and looking into alternative financing models for a stadium, including paying for one itself as opposed to having an individual owner foot the bill…

…For the first time in the history of the National Hockey League, a U.S. arena will feature LED lighting, when PNC Arena—home to the Carolina Hurricanes—unveils the new, cutting-edge system for the preseason opener this fall. Dave Olsen, Executive Vice President and General Manager of PNC Arena, announced that the Centennial Authority has partnered with Musco, which will install its innovative Show-Light Green LED system in the coming weeks…
