SVG Summit: Fox, ESPN, MLBAM Execs Peer into Sports Broadcasting’s Crystal Ball

SVG Summit attendees were given a glimpse into “The Future of Sports Broadcasting,” thanks to a Day Two panel that delved into next-generation technologies like 4K, “at-home” productions, data-driven on-screen applications, and how sports-production professionals can prepare for their arrival on the scene.

Moderated by Vice President of HBO Sports Production Jason Cohen, the panel featured insights from ESPN’s Jed Drake (SVP, Product Innovation) and Amy Rosenfeld (Senior Coordinating Producer) regarding their use of 4K technology on a variety of live sports properties and experimentation with at-home workflows that allow the majority of a remote-production’s operations to take place at ESPN’s headquarters in Bristol, CT.

Fox Sports Technology Consultant Jerry Steinberg and Fox Sports Director Artie Kempner addressed the challenges of 4K, including the need to reeducate camera and replay operators, as well as the future of drones for sports coverage.

Finally, MLB Advanced Media VP of Multimedia Technology Development Dirk Van Dall provided a glimpse into the league’s dive into advanced analytics and player-tracking data visualization tools.
