Company brings online codes to traditional TV

CToost.com from Connecticut reports that a company with Fairfield ties is looking to turn traditional TV into something more like its online counterpart.

SymbolShifters, with homes in the Southport section of town and Scottsdale, Ariz., has patented a method for connecting a traditional television broadcast to the digital universe by use of scannable codes that have become common in print but have never taken hold with television.

QR codes, the black-and-white squares that look like digitized Rorschach tests, provide links to websites and convey information far beyond what can be presented in a TV commercial.

To be large enough to be noticed on television, they could be obtrusive. And no one wants to take the time to pause the TV, get out a smartphone, walk up to the screen and scan the code, said Walt Ciciora, vice president of SymbolShifters, who lives in Southport.
