Behind the Mic: Matt Millen Joins Big Ten Network; Turner Re-Ups Inside the NBA Team

Former college football All-American, four-time NFL Super Bowl champion linebacker and experienced broadcaster Matt Millen returns to the FOX Sports as the lead game analyst for the Big Ten Network, working alongside play-by-play announcer Kevin Kugler. Additionally, he appears in FOX Sports 1’s Los Angeles studio as both a college football and NFL analyst for the original news programs AMERICA’S PREGAME and FOX SPORTS LIVE. Millen pursued broadcasting after his retirement, joining CBS as an analyst for its NFL game telecasts in 1992, before signing on with the upstart FOX Sports for its presentation of the NFC package in 1994. He later also served as a color analyst for Monday Night Football games on Westwood One radio. In 2001, he moved from the broadcast booth to the front office when he accepted the position of team president for the Detroit Lions, a position he held from 2001 to 2008. Millen returned to broadcasting in 2009 with ESPN, performing both college and pro football analyst duties through the end of last season. …Earlier this month, Turner Sports announced multi-year extensions for each member of TNT’s Inside the NBA studio team: host Ernie Johnson and analysts Charles Barkley, Kenny Smith and Shaquille O’Neal. Johnson, a three-time Sports Emmy Award winner, is currently in his 26th year as a studio host for Turner’s NBA telecasts. Barkley, a member of the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame and two-time Sports Emmy Award winner, is in his 16th year as studio analyst for TNT’s Inside the NBA. Smith, a two-time NBA champion, is in his 18th year as studio analyst for TNT’s Inside the NBA.  O’Neal, a four-time NBA Champion and 15-time NBA All-Star, joined TNT’s Inside the NBA studio team in 2011 following a 19-year NBA career…

The 2015 ESPYS will be hosted by comedian, actor and television host Joel McHale, most widely known for hosting The Soup on E! as well as playing Jeff Winger on Community. McHale, who hosted last year’s White House Correspondents’ Dinner, will host the ESPYS live on ABC Wednesday, July 15, at 8 p.m. ET from Nokia Theatre L.A. LIVE in Los Angeles…

…Jeff Gordon, the four-time NASCAR Cup Series champion joins FOX NASCAR fulltime in 2016 as race analyst for its 16th year of NASCAR SPRINT CUP SERIES coverage, teaming with three-time champion Darrell Waltrip to offer seven championships’ worth of expertise. Gordon, currently competing in his 23rd and final fulltime Sprint Cup Series season, served as race analyst for FOX Sports’ coverage of three NASCAR XFINITY SERIES races this year. He has agreed to a multi-year contract that begins this season with in-race reporting from the No. 24 Chevrolet during select Cup Series races, and segues to an analyst role that commences with Daytona Speedweeks in February 2016. Gordon will call all NASCAR SPRINT CUP SERIES races, practice and qualifying sessions for FOX Sports alongside play-by-play announcer Mike Joy and NASCAR Hall of Famer and analyst Darrell Waltrip. … Chris Connelly, the award-winning reporter and essayist has been named Interim Editor-in-Chief of Grantland. …Jenny Taft, Julie Stewart-Binks and Grant Wahl have been formally named to the FIFA Women’s World Cup broadcast team FOX Sports. Taft has been assigned the major role of being embedded with the U.S. Women’s National Team (USWNT), providing in-depth reports, breaking news and features on the squad throughout the tournament as she has since World Cup Qualifying.  Stewart-Binks, a native Canadian, serves as a roving reporter, and is expected to report from at least 11 different games in four different cities during the group stage. Wahl serves as correspondent-at-large, covering the wide-array of stories that develop naturally during a month-long tournament. …ESPN Audio has debuted The “Golf” Podcast with ESPN.com golf writers Michael Collins and Jason Sobel discussing the action on the course and everything surrounding the game and the athletes.  The podcast will be offered bi-weekly and will generally last about 30 minutes. Collins joined ESPN.com in 2011 after 10 years as a PGA caddie plus 20 as a stand-up comedian. Sobel worked for ESPN from 1997 – 2011 and recently rejoined the company…

…SiriusXM has signed Peter Oosterhuis to host a new show on the SiriusXM PGA TOUR Radio channel. Oosty & Fred, which Oosterhuis will host alongside Fred Albers, will air live Saturday mornings from 8:00 to 10:00 am ET. The British-born Oosterhuis won seven times on the European Tour and played the PGA TOUR for 11 years and was part of six Ryder Cup teams from 1971-1981. Oosterhuis began working as a TV analyst in 1995. He worked at Golf Channel, BBC and CBS – where he was a member of the Masters broadcast team for 18 years – before retiring from the television booth earlier this year. Fred Albers is a longtime member of SiriusXM’s broadcast team for live PGA TOUR events.  He worked for more than three decades as a sports broadcaster in El Paso, Texas, where he also did play-by-play for University of Texas at El Paso basketball games and hosted The Don Haskins Show

…Sports radio and television broadcaster Anita Marks has joined ESPN New York 98.7FM as a weekend host beginning Sunday, May 17, at 11 a.m. ET. Additionally, she will provide SportsCenter updates regularly on weekdays and host or co-host multiple shows as needed. ESPN New York 98.7FM will be the exclusive radio home to Marks. Marks has more than a decade of sports talk radio experience, including such markets as New York, Baltimore and Miami, and most recently was the host of The Anita Marks Show on NBC Sports Radio (2013 – 2015).  She also appeared this past NFL season as an analyst on CBS Sports Network’s That Other Pregame Show and has covered the New York Giants for Giants.com and MSG Network for several years. Marks had previously hosted shows on WFAN and Sirius XM, among others, and has served as a fantasy football analyst for Bleacher Report and Bloomberg Sports.
