NAB 2016: ATEME’s Titan Adds Technicolor’s HDR-Distribution Technology, Will Integrate Dolby Vision

ATEME (Booth SU4402) is extending its support for high dynamic range by integrating Technicolor’s enhanced HDR distribution technology into TITAN, its video-transcoding software for live and file applications solutions. The move makes the HDR functionality available to content owners, distributors, and other service providers that use ATEME’s encoding technology. Also, the supplier of video-compression solutions has announced that it intends to add Dolby Vision HDR technology into TITAN.

TITAN is intended to deliver the highest video quality at minimum bitrates with accelerated parallel processing. For HDR, it can leverage SMPTE ST 2084 Perceptual Quantizer Electro-Optical Transfer Function and SMPTE ST 2086 color-grading metadata, in addition to HEVC UHD and BT.2020 color space, and now SMPTE ST 2094 color volume transformation dynamic metadata.

“Over the last two years, ATEME worked closely with leading Hollywood studios, TV manufacturers, and STB-chipset vendors to ensure end-to-end UHD-4K HDR interoperability,” says Mickaël Raulet, R&D manager, ATEME. “The TITAN with HDR support has been installed by numerous tier-one service providers, studios, and networks, enabling a risk-free deployment of an integrated proven solution.

Says Teddy Florent, senior product director, HDR and video technologies, Technicolor, “Technicolor’s HDR distribution solution addresses key video-distribution issues that affect the entire ecosystem. For studios, our HDR technology ensures the delivery of image quality that preserves the creative intent when the content was conceived. For broadcasters, our technology addresses key bandwidth-management and backwards-compatibility issues to provide a cost-effective way to support the installed base of SDR and HDR displays. Finally, because it is a single-stream solution, Technicolor’s approach to HDR reduces complexity by only requiring a single decoder on CE devices.”

TITAN and Dolby Vision
Based on the SMPTE ST 2084 (PQ) standard and the BT.2020 color space, the addition of Dolby Vision’s ST 2094 dynamic metadata produces the industry’s ultimate HDR format. Encoded by TITAN in HEVC Main 10, the full Dolby Vision signal is compressed for distribution as a single layer non–backwards-compatible stream, or a dual-layer stream for uncompromised backward-compatibility supporting today’s standard rec.709 TVs as well as the latest Dolby Vision and HDR-10 TVs. These stream configurations can be selected for a variety of packaging formats to enable optical-media (Blu-ray), OTT, terrestrial, cable, satellite, or IPTV delivery. Integration of Dolby Vision into the TITAN solution will allow content providers, distributors and service providers to apply Dolby Vision technology without adding a step in already complex workflows.

“ATEME’s premium quality and encoding efficiency will allow roll-out of even more Dolby Vision-enabled content for the home,” says Dolby Vision VP Roland Vlaicu. “With its dramatic imaging and artistic accuracy, Dolby Vision, delivered with ATEME’s incredibly low bitrates, can transform the consumer experience with value everyone can see.”

ATEME CEO Michel Artières says, “ATEME TITAN with HDR support has already been largely approved, adopted, and deployed by various tier-one broadcasters and service providers all around the world. Natively bundling Dolby Vision with ATEME TITAN may allow more operational flexibility and greatly simplify powerful premium HDR workflows.”
