Venue News: Texas Rangers’ Proposed Stadium Could Exceed $1B; New York Yankees Announce Improvements to Guest Experience

Venue News puts the spotlight on the sports-venue industry, delivering the latest on new builds and recent renovations, venues currently under construction, and proposed stadiums and arenas on the horizon, all with an eye on what fans can expect from their in-game experience. This week’s Venue News looks at the Texas Rangers’ proposed stadium, which may exceed estimated costs; the Yankees’ planned improvements to the guest experience; the most recent developments on future NFL stadiums in Los Angeles and Las Vegas, and more.

A WFAA-TV analysis has determined the actual costs and possible giveaways for the proposed $1 billion, retractable-roof stadium for the Texas Rangers may be much higher than the “50-50” private-public partnership touted by City of Arlington officials, writes USA Today. Rather than the $500 million price tag city officials have told citizens, the actual cost and lost revenues to the city of Arlington may be closer to $1.675 billion over 30 years — at least three times more than the estimate…
The New York Yankees announced that Yankee Stadium will undergo its first series of major design enhancements, which are intended to improve the guest experience for fans of all ages. Enhancements will include seven new social gathering spaces and additional dynamic food and beverage areas. Construction will begin this week for an anticipated debut prior to the start of the 2017 regular season…
…The University of Iowa is moving forward with plans for a $90 million renovation of Kinnick Stadium, writes the Associated Press. The Iowa Board of Regents approved the design and financing plan for the project, which will renovate one of the stadium’s end zones. The enhancements to the north end zone include a second deck for seating, new restrooms, expanded concourses, and improved concessions. The project will begin after the 2016 season and be completed prior to the 2019 season…
…On Monday, before flying to Houston for a two-day NFL owners meeting, the Oakland Raiders owner Mark Davis took a little trip to Las Vegas. He was not there to gamble, but to celebrate. The previous week, the Nevada Legislature had held a short special session, called by Gov. Brian Sandoval, to pass a bill that would commit a stunning $750 million in state money to a proposed $1.9 billion football stadium. The problem, writes The New York Times, is the Las Vegas stadium may be an ego boost, but not an economic one…
…The start of excavation for the Los Angeles Rams’ $2.6-billion stadium in Inglewood may be weeks away, according to the Los Angeles Times. In another sign of progress on the project at the 298-acre site, the Federal Aviation Administration this week approved the first of several pieces of heavy equipment to be used during construction. The FAA determined that a 110-foot-tall LB 44 rotary drill rig won’t pose a hazard to air navigation. Six other applications are pending with the FAA for large cranes to be used for the stadium project.
