SMT Delivers Multi-Stadium Video Board Production for 2017 Reebok CrossFit Games

SMT (SportsMEDIA Technology) has expanded its role for the 2017 Reebok CrossFit Games, delivering simultaneous multi-stadium video board productions and broadcast productions in addition to continuing to serve as the Games’ official results provider.

SMT has supported the CrossFit Games since 2011, delivering the first scoring services and, in 2013, adding timing services to the CrossFit Games, where 40 women and 40 men compete for the title of “Fittest on Earth” and $2.4 million in cash prizes.

SMT is providing a myriad of services for this year’s Reebok CrossFit Games, taking place Aug. 3-6 across five sites at the Alliant Energy Center campus in Madison, Wis., in a new format event promotors are billing as “equal parts festival, concert and sporting event.”

SMT’s video board productions will operate simultaneously across the five venues, helping the estimated 14,000 attendees keep up with the competitions, navigate the grounds, and enjoy the Games. SMT’s design firm, (n+1) designstudio, created the graphics package for the boards, with schedules, lane assignments, live scores, results, competition standings, social media, sponsors, competition clock and live video.

The Coliseum, the primary venue, is outfitted with four video boards and four clock displays, as well as a ribbon board on the perimeter of one side. The second venue, the Pavilion, has two large video walls, as well as four clock displays. The North Park has four clock displays. The Beer Garden features SMT’s 20- by 50-foot Superwall, allowing fans to watch simultaneous live video from all five venues, in addition to start lists, live scores, event results, athlete profiles, standings, sponsor content, social media posts and scheduling and event information.

“SMT’s suite of products allows the new festival-style Reebok CrossFit Games to showcase the world’s fittest athletes to fans on-site in Madison, as well as those watching on the web and on CBS,” says David Lunghino, SMT VP Business Development. “SMT’s unique CrossFit scoring system gives both attendees and competitors instant access to the results as they unfold. With SMT’s video production and broadcast services, SMT delivers the content that is most crucial when telling the stories of the world’s fittest athletes.”

This year, the Games are introducing the role of an SMT Site Director, an on-the-ground producer who recognizes key moments of the Games, such as potential upsets, trends, injuries and other storylines, and broadcasts “best- of” content for the video displays and the broadcasts.

Other SMT services for the 2017 Reebok CrossFit Games include:

Official Results System: SMT’s robust results system captures the timing and scoring of the varied Reebok CrossFit Games events and distributes this information in real-time to media, display, web and broadcast.

Web Feed: SMT is providing live results to Games.CrossFit.com, the host site for the Reebok CrossFit Games.

Closed Circuit Television Feed: CrossFit’s closed circuit television system has one channel of live video of the CrossFit Games, one channel displaying a schedule of the day, and a third channel that shows the current leaderboard for the men’s, women’s, teams and master’s competitions.

Broadcast services: CrossFit’s broadcasts rely on SMT’s custom ‘top bar’ graphics system as well as live broadcast interface. This is supplemented with SMT ISO Track technology, which uses live aerial cameras from helicopters and fixed-wing planes to identify and track athletes in an on-air pointer graphic.

Commentator System: Live venue and on-air talent use SMT Commentator system to have live time, score and results at their fingertips.

Beginning Aug. 3, the four-day event will be televised at 10 p.m. ET each night on the CBS Sports Network. On Saturday, Aug. 5, CBS Sports will air live coverage beginning at 1 p.m. ET. The Games will also be live-streamed on CBSSports.com, Facebook and Games.CrossFit.com.
