Daktronics Installs LED Displays at Purdue University’s Mackey Arena, DCU Center, and Scottsbluff HS

Purdue University’s Mackey Arena in West Lafayette, IN, will welcome 13 new LED displays manufactured and installed by Daktronics. The new system at Purdue is currently being installed and be ready to inform and entertain Boilermaker fans when basketball seasons begin. To follow in Purdue’s footsteps, SMG-managed DCU Center in the City of Worcester upgrades their facility with 11 new LED displays while Scottsbluff High School in Nebraska will welcome home three new LED video displays.

“The new video boards will bring even more energy and engagement to our already tremendous game-day atmosphere, which will both benefit our basketball programs and further entertain our fans,” says Mike Bobinski, Purdue Vice President and athletics director.

A centerhung display system will be installed over the playing surface is comprised of four curved video displays, each measuring 13 feet high by 19 feet wide and featuring 6-millimeter line spacing. Installed above these displays will be a ring display featuring 10-millimeter line spacing and measuring 3 feet high by 109 feet in circumference.

Four 11-foot-high by 20-foot-wide video displays will also be installed, one in each corner of the arena. Additionally, four ribbon displays will be grace the seating fascia of the arena, each measuring 3 feet high by 47 feet wide. All will feature 10-millimeter line spacing to provide clear imagery to fans in every seat.

“We’re excited to work with Purdue University on a such a complex design for new video display in Mackey Arena,” says Ryan Stratton, Daktronics sales representative. “The new centerhung configuration will bring excitement and energy to the building during every home game and we’re looking forward to seeing it happen this winter for the Boilermakers.”

The main centerhung displays and corner displays are capable of variable content zoning allowing them to show one large image or be divided into multiple zones to show any combination of live video, instant replays, game statistics and information, graphics and animations, and sponsorship messages. The ring and ribbon displays will provide complementary statistics and information to the main displays while also providing the opportunity to highlight sponsors throughout events.

Purdue University will also receive a bank of hours for the creation of digital content to be produced and delivered by Daktronics Creative Services at the request of the university.

Meanwhile, the installation at the DCU center was recently completed and the system is now ready to entertain and engage a wide variety of concert fans, family show attendees and Worcester Railers HC members this season.

”SMG is proud to offer the highest level of quality product and services for both our clients and patrons,” says Sandy Dunn, SMG General Manager of the DCU Center. “Working with Daktronics to design the HD displays and a robust system that will deliver supreme performance standards was great. We look forward to welcoming fans back this fall with a whole new HD fan experience.”

The centerhung features nine LED displays including four main video displays, four corner wedge displays and a lower ring display, all featuring 10-millimeter line spacing. The main displays each measure 8 feet high by 14.5 feet wide, the corner wedges measure 8.5 feet high by 3.5 feet wide and the lower ring measures 2 feet high by 58 feet in circumference.

The main displays are capable of variable content zoning allowing them to show one large image or multiple zones to show any combination of live video, instant replay, up-to-the-minute statistics, graphic and animations, and sponsorship messaging.

“This is a great project that we’re proud to be a part of for the SMG-managed DCU Center in Worcester,” says Dave D’Amico, Daktronics sales representative. “The new centerhung system will catch fans attention the moment they enter the venue and will continue to provide an extra element to their overall experience. We’re excited to see the impact these displays will have at events this fall.”

As for Scottsbluff High School in Nebraska, the former gymnasium that will showcase two new video displays each paired with a new scoreboard, will see an update with a new video display and scoreboard combination while the softball field will add a new scoreboard to keep fans on the edge of their seats.

“This equipment will give our old gym a fresh, new update,” says Dave Hoxworth, Scottsbluff’s assistant principal/activities director. “It will definitely be a focal point of the gym. Our softball fields will now have two scoreboards and we are updating the football stadium’s display. But, the best part is that the software in the gym and the stadium will be very similar.” Hoxworth’s excitement for the Bearcats’ upgrade is contagious, having made the local news and media.

Upon game day, football fans will see 121 square feet of live video with 20-millimeter line spacing, and the gymnasium’s displays measure 58 square feet with 6-millimeter line spacing, suitable for closer audiences. Each display is capable of full-color imagery and live action shots, showcasing  quality resolution.

Scottsbluff High School will also receive a bank of hours for the creation of digital content to be produced and delivered by Daktronics Creative Services at the request of the school.
