Sony Supports Boys and Girls Club Through Technology and Community Outreach

Sony continued its long-standing relationship with the Boys and Girls Club during a community outreach event at the organization’s Paterson and Passaic chapter in Paterson, NJ. New York Red Bulls’ player Derrick Etienne Jr. signed autographs and spoke to 300 children in attendance, sharing his experiences growing up in the area and emphasizing the importance of school, hard work and giving back to the local community. The Red Bulls’ Street Team entertained the crowd and Sony made a surprise technology donation of headphones and alpha mirrorless cameras to help support the club’s digital arts, photography and STEM programming.

Sony’s professional group is headquartered in Park Ridge, New Jersey, and recently retro-fitted the Red Bulls’ arena in Harrison, N.J. with equipment to enhance the fan experience and support broadcasts.

“It’s meaningful when our relationships can expand beyond products and technology to include community outreach,” Mike Fasulo, President and COO of Sony Electronics Inc says.

“Sony maintains a goal of educating and inspiring youth. We leveraged our resources and created a memorable experience for
the children at the Boys and Girls Club. Giving them access to a local sports celebrity, along with technology that will help them succeed in school and learn about storytelling through photography is very rewarding.”

“Sony and the Boys and Girls Club share a deep and long-standing commitment to community outreach,” Wendy McGuire, Deputy Executive Director at the Boys and Girls Club of Paterson and Passaic, says.

“Together we were able to create an unforgettable event for our youth. The children were excited to see the Street Team perform and meet a professional athlete of Derrick’s caliber who grew up in their hometown. Our attendees went crazy when Sony unveiled their donations. The cameras will give them new a new outlet for their creativity, and the headphones will be an important part of our STEM and online efforts, as well as the children’s recreational activities.”

Over the years, Sony has supported the Boys and Girls Club of America in the following ways:

National:

  • Since 2012, Sony has supported the Boys & Girls Clubs of America as a National Partner.  Specifically, Sony sponsors the ImageMakers National Photography Program and Contest.
  • The BGCA Arts programming is geared toward giving kids a voice through the arts, and with Sony’s support, BGCA youth can engage in visual storytelling through the ImageMakers National Photography Program that helps Club members ages 6-18 learn the art and science of photography through multiple categories: Culture and Tradition, Portraits, Nature and Surroundings, Fashion and Style, and Editing and Filter. Photographs are displayed at local and regional exhibits around the world.
  • Mike Fasulo, Sony President and COO, serves on the National Board of Trustees.

Regional:

  • Annually, Sony supports the BGCA Military Youth of the Year, Pacific Region program.  The Military Youth of the Year honor is a distinct component of the National Youth of the Year program. It recognizes a Club member that has served on a U.S. military installation and has overcome enormous odds, while demonstrating exceptional character and accomplishments.

Locally:

  • Sony employees serve on local boards.
  • In 2017, Sony and Best Buy partnered to open a Teen Tech Center at the Boys & Girls Club of San Marcos.
  • In 2016, Sony outfitted the STEM Maker Lab at the Boys & Girls Club of Paterson and Passaic with technology including smart TVs, cameras and headphones that students use daily for academic and recreational use.
  • Sony employees volunteer with local club youth to expose them to technology, our company and to get hands on with our products.
