SBS Relies on TVU’s IP Video Solutions For Daily Remote News Gathering

TVU Networks announced that SBS has been using its mobile IP live video transmitters daily for remote news production. The broadcaster has been employing TVU Networks’ TVUPack since 2012, and recently purchased TVU One with HEVC live mobile IP newsgathering transmitter units for transmission both nationally and at its international news bureaus.

Launched in 1991, SBS is the second commercial broadcaster in South Korea and a producer of news, sports, and entertainment coverage both nationally and around the world. SBS currently runs one digital terrestrial television station, two radio stations, and seven cable television channels, including SBS Golf, SBS E!, SBS Sports, SBS MTV and Nickelodeon Korea.

SBS has been using TVU One transmitters nationally as a part of its “Morning Wide” morning news and talk show on its terrestrial station, SBS TV. As SBS expanded its global news reach this year, the broadcaster was looking for new technology for remote video acquisition from its international bureaus.

“In the past, we’ve used dedicated submarine networks for international correspondence,” says Hak Hyeon Kim, manager, SBS Technical Planning Team.

“But as SBS expands its global news coverage, we were looking for a more cost-efficient technology that could produce vivid video, improve our news coverage capabilities, and enable our crews to easily produce and transmit video out in the field back to our studios. We had been using TVU Networks’ TVUPack video transmitters, and we found them to be easy to use and quick to deploy. Knowing that we could count on the reliability of TVU’s live video transmission technology even in challenging bandwidth environments, we recently added TVU One units into our broadcast workflow for remote video acquisition.”

SBS has added TVU One with HEVC/H.265 units to its news bureaus in Tokyo, Los Angeles, New York and Washington D.C. With the addition of TVU One with HEVC, SBS is realizing real cost savings on broadband use by taking advantage of the more efficient compression and data management inherent in HEVC encoding when compared to H.264 together with TVU’s Inverse StatMux Plus technology. TVU’s transmitters provide simple, worry-free operation to the SBS production team out in the field, and the video is easily sent back to SBS’s broadcasting center in Seoul.

SBS has depended on its TVU Networks equipment for the production of important news and live events, including the World Cup, Olympics, and election coverage leading up to and during both the 2014 and 2017 South Korean presidential elections. TVU One enables SBS to easily capture and transmit video from both its international correspondents and news team in and around Seoul.
