USA Today Releases First AR Experience of 2019 with Washington Capitals Player

New program offers 3D models of and narration by defenseman John Carlson

USA Today Network has been experimenting in emerging technologies, such as virtual reality and augmented reality, since 2015 and today has taken the next step with the release of an AR program focused on Washington Capitals defenseman John Carlson. The experience features three 3D models of him, each with an audio narration in which he discusses the upcoming All-Star game, his journey to the Stanley Cup, and his position as a Capitals defenseman and life in Washington, DC.

The Emerging Technologies team at USA Today Network created a sports-related experience based on NHL superstar John Carlson.

“This is going to be a very exciting year for our team and our audience,” says Ray Soto, director, emerging technology, USA Today Network. “We have set an ambitious goal for the number of interactive experiences to produce this year, across different content verticals, and look forward to bringing our audiences more immersive and interactive stories through the year.”

The team from USA Today Network worked quickly, developing the models and experience in one week, showcasing its ability to produce emerging-tech content with efficiency and at scale.

You can experience the AR piece in the USA Today app on Android and iOS devices in the Sports section.
