Harmonic brings flexibility to mobile bandwidth

Harmonic today introduced two new rack-mountable platforms for the FLXLink transport system. The goal? To give operators more flexibility in determining bandwidth needs for backhauling mobile voice, data and, more frequently, video content between the fiber-based access network and the towers at the wireless edge.

The need for the products was born out of customer need to accommodate the expanding range of services and growing volume of traffic, operators must find a way to efficiently and securely scale the bandwidth to and from the wireless network.

The new one rack unit FLXLink HLP 9200 and two-rack unit HLP 9300 platforms host multiple service cards, or network interface units (NIU), improving system density and manageability. In addition, the modular design allows operators to scale the capacity as needed by simply adding NIUs to the platform, or upgrading a NIU with one that offers greater capacity.

“The future of communications and entertainment is tightly connected to the evolution of mobile technologies that will allow anytime, anywhere and on any device access to existing and yet to be imagined services,” said Sunil Frida, Commercial Services Solution Manager for Harmonic Inc.

The 2-RU FLXLink HLP 9300 holds up to three T1/E1 cards, each delivering four full T1/E1 circuits and one 100-Mbps Ethernet service. To satisfy the increasing appetite for enterprise bandwidth, the platform can alternatively house a combination of six 100-Mbps and 1-Gbps high-speed Ethernet cards while the 1-RU HLP 9200 holds two NIUs.
The new HLP 9300 platform also offers a DC powering option which is often a key requirement for tower site deployments. Operators can enjoy increased service uptime and availability with redundant and hot-swappable AC and DC power supplies. In addition, by enabling the use of the same type of NIU at both the service provider and customer facilities, Harmonic dramatically reduced the spares requirement, further enhancing an already compelling business case.
