Major League Baseball, USA Baseball form 10-year business partnership

Major League Baseball and USA Baseball (USAB), the National Governing Body of amateur baseball in the United States, have announced a new 10-year agreement in which Major League Baseball will acquire all commercial rights for USAB. The deal enables USAB, which selects and trains the USA Baseball Olympic Team, Collegiate National Team, Junior National Team, Youth National Team, and Women s National Team, to focus its resources on growing amateur baseball in the United States.

The mission of USA Baseball is to promote and develop the game on the grassroots level, both nationally and internationally, said Paul Seiler, executive director and CEO of USA Baseball. Major League Baseball s business resources are unparalleled and this new partnership will not only enable our organization to benefit from their expertise, but will allow us to focus on growing the greatest game in the world.

An integral part of the agreement is the decision by Major League Baseball to acquire USAB sponsorship, licensing, and other business rights, which will immediately be transferred to Major League Baseball Properties, the business arm of the League. MLB Advanced Media, the League s interactive media and Internet company, will obtain USAB’s Internet rights, and MLB Properties will provide USAB with a guaranteed level of annual funding to support its athlete programs. The revenue-sharing opportunity included in the deal aims to provide for future growth in the USAB organization, and the funding promised by MLB is the largest financial commitment ever made to USA Baseball.

Major League Baseball is excited about this significant expansion of our relationship with USA Baseball, said Baseball Commissioner Allan H. (Bud) Selig. By strengthening the bonds between the National Governing Body for amateur baseball and Major League Baseball, we will be able to better understand both the needs and the opportunities that exist and put initiatives in place to encourage growth of the game at all levels.

The agreement will strengthen USAB and its amateur programs by allowing the organization to concentrate on its stated mission: the growth of amateur baseball. MLB will assist USAB through its existing structures, partnerships, and business strategies, while investing in the development of future talent and interest in the game.

Major League Baseball s support of USAB previously included event sponsorship and the funding of international teams and events such as the World Baseball Classic.
