Sennheiser microphones free RF channels for FOX, NFL

By Andrew Lippe

Fox and the NFL Network have chosen CP Communications to provide Sennheiser microphones that have greater channel frequency for an ever-crowded RF spectrum.

We want to give operators
maximum frequency when they move from city to city, said Joe Ciaudelli
director of marketing at Sennheiser. Fox rented 4 complete EM 1046 racks. The
EM 1046 RX receiver module is at the heart of any 5000 series receiver system and has up to eight receiver modules. Due to the menu-assisted operation, parameters it can quickly and easily be modified.

Usually the EM 1046 has the
eight modules set to the same frequency. The new racks are different in that every
two receiver modules has its own frequency setting allowing six free frequency channels
all within a single mainframe. Sennheiser also
modified their antennae input module so that the unit can accept all ranges for
better frequency flexibility.

This Wi-banded technology is
truly state of the art. It has a frequency window of 36
megahertz compared to the traditional 24. The package also included 16 SK250
bodypack transmitters, 24 EM3532 receivers and 18 5200 handheld wireless
microphones that are equipped with a command center transmitter.

The 5200 transmitter operates
with a B5000-2-Command body Pack with Command channel. The push-to-talk feature allows the talent to switch from the broadcast mode to Command mode to talk to the broadcast truck or engineers. Any audio directions are broadcast over a separate output and go directly
to the broadcast truck, said Ciaudelli. It is an intercom for technical
directions. An exclusive feature and Sennheiser is
the first to have it. There is also a flag extension that allows reporters to
easily use the command function and still have a broadcast flag on the
transmitter.

The wireless system is also
being used with the new AP 5000 circularly polarized antenna which delivers an extraordinarily smooth pickup pattern. One
of our biggest strengths is our wide selection of frequencies, said Ciaudelli.
