Chellomedia has opened a new high definition sports studio at its Digital Media Centre (DMC) in Amsterdam. The facility is being used for presentation of the UEFA Champions League and FA Premier League football competitions.

As the European division of the Liberty Global group, Chellomedia provides play-out facilities and video services to a number of leading broadcasters. Among these is Extreme Sports Channel, a youth-oriented service reaching over 20 million households across Europe, Africa and the Middle East, with dedicated feeds in the UK, Portugal, France and Poland.

The three camera studio features a Grass Valley Kayak HD vision mixer and Sony HDCAM VTRs. For audio an existing Soundtracs DPC-II digital production console, with Dolby E capability to receive 5.1 feeds, was installed into the control area.

The studio was designed, installed and commissioned by UK systems integrator Broadcast Networks, which also upgraded other areas of the DMC. Among the equipment for this refurbishment are a number of nVision HD matrices, including a 256×256 transmission matrix, a separate 64×64 HD backup transmission matrix and a 256×256 HD production matrix.

The master control room has been updated and now has full HD capability, with the existing automation system being expanded so that it can play-out the additional HD channels.

The central storage network of the DMC has been expanded through the installation of a Quantel Live Production SQ Server and an Omneon play-out transmission server. A number of Quantel SQ editing also form part of the new system, while a NVOD play-out server has been installed to distribute Chellomedia’s video-on-demand services.
