Ikegami, Chyron key NHL All-Star scoreboard ops

By Andrew Lippe

The American Airlines Center in Dallas is buzzing as tonight the NHL SuperSkills competition takes place and kicks the All-Star festivities into high gear. While the NHL Network and Versus network are airing the competition out to Canada and the United States, Chandler Merritt and his operations crew are providing videos on the arena scoreboard for the thousands of fans in the Dallas arena.

“All together my team is around 30 people,” said Chandler Merritt producer of gamenight operations at American Airlines Center. “We have put many videos together including six introduction videos for the skills competition.” The team will use four cameras to capture the event for in-arena scoreboards: they have two hard cameras which are Ikegami 4:3 studio cameras, and two handheld cameras which are an Ikegami HL-45 and an Ikegami HK-355s.

For tomorrow’s All-Star game they produced multiple videos including player profiles, replay packages and montages of a lot of players. “Primarily most of the footage we have been using was brought in by the league,” said Merritt.

To create the graphics for the videos, Merritt and his team used a Chyron Duet machine to make a lot of full page fonts. Avid and Adobe After Effects were also used for creating the packages.
