Olympic Oval taps Daktronics for Speed Skating, Hockey

by Andrew Lippe

The Olympic Oval located at the
Calgary in

Canada, a venue for speed
skating and ice-hockey has upgraded to a Daktronics ProStar VideoPlus
system. The Olympic Oval previously required two separate display boards but
now needs only one. Fans can now view live video footage simultaneously with
team and individual statistics.

“We are getting into our busiest season now,” said Kameron
Kiland, Director of Operations for the Faculty of Kinesiology at the

University of
Calgary. The ProStar system was
installed in the Oval on December 16th 2006. It has been used during
the Canadian speed skating championships, which took place from December 28th
to December 31st. It has also been used for

University of
hockey games and National Women’s Hockey League (NWHL) games.

“It’s a big upgrade from our old Matrix board,” said
Kiland. For the speed skating event the board displayed the list of
skaters, their times and who’s up next on one side, and then on the other side
of the display was live video of the race.

The ProStar display measures approximately 12 feet high by
30 feet wide. It has 12 millimeter pixilated spacing and LED technology. “When
we saw the 12 millimeter board we were quite impressed with it,” said

The system operates using a Venus controller that helps
integrate the video and scoring together. “It would be difficult for one person
to run the whole board,” said Kiland. Therefore they have one person
handle the scoring of it, and one person looking after the video side of
things. They can also do split screens and have running times for different
events displayed.

“Its biggest asset is its versatility,” said Kiland. Other
international skating and corporate events are planned for the near future that
will utilize the new board.
