Sennheiser hits NAB with new receiver, mic head

Sennheiser heads to NAB with the lightweight EK 3241 true-diversity portable receiver as well as a new microphone head for its top RF wireless mic.

The receiver, known as the EK 3241, is specifically designed for location sound recording. It improves upon its predecessor, the EK 3041 by using a 36MHz switching bandwidth that is tunable in 5kHz increments to generate 7,200 frequency options. And it weighs just over seven ounces, can be powered from a camcorder or via a rechargeable battery and has an easy-to-use redesigned interface according to Sennheiser.

“Because of the dramatically increasing use of wireless devices in recent years, field recordists must rely on frequency-agile products to avoid interference,” says Dawn Birr, product manager, professional systems.

In terms of frequency flexibility it ships with 32 custom frequencies preprogrammed, and users are free to store an additional 20 frequencies of their choosing in a user memory bank. As an optional feature, the EK 3241 offers a Command Channel function that opens up a second audio channel to the mixer. Users can switch between the normal audio channel and the command channel, or they can mix the two.

Also new is the MD 5235 mic head for the SKM 5200 RF wireless microphone. Sennheiser says the extremely rugged dynamic capsule easily cuts through high on-stage levels and the new mic head can be used with all handheld transmitters of Sennheiser’s 5000 Series” the SKM 5000, SKM 5000 N and the latest model, SKM 5200.

Birr says the new capsule, the ninth introduced for the 5200, is designed specifically for vocals on very loud stages. “It’s based on the successful evolution 935 vocal microphone and combines the pronounced presence and vocal ‘punch’ of this cardioid dynamic microphone with the superior RF wireless transmission of the SKM 5200.”
