The New York Times Launches E-Newsletter from PLAY

The New
York Times today launched a new weekly e-mail newsletter from PLAY, the sports
magazine of The New York Times. The free newsletter will be distributed each
Thursday beginning on April 26. Subscribers can sign up at
www.NYTimes.com/PlayEmail.com.

The PLAY
e-mail newsletter will be a timely, quick read with features designed for the
needs and interests of the PLAY reader. The newsletter will feature the voices
of PLAY’s writers and editors on the subjects and events most on sports lovers’
minds, from specific games, issues and personalities to the latest in fitness
and sports adventures. It will also update readers on people and topics
previously featured in the print version of the magazine, and preview future issues.
The PLAY e-mail will include regular departments called Playbook, about
spectator sports, and At Play, about participatory sports, travel and fitness.
It will also provide interactive and multimedia features that will include
readers’ opinions and polls.

“The newsletter is a perfect bridge for our readers to follow
their favorite sports topics in the weeks between issues of the magazine,

” says Mark Bryant, editor of PLAY Magazine.

The PLAY
e-mail newsletter will launch with a base of over 10,000 subscribers who signed
up on the Web site. The Times will promote the newsletter online and in print.
Plans also call for the newsletter

content to appear in print in selected editions of The Times

sports section.

PLAY: The
New York Times Sports Magazine is distributed quarterly through the Sunday New
York Times, which reaches 5.1 million readers every Sunday in hundreds of
markets across the nation (source: 2006 Fall MRI). It can also be read online
at NYTimes.com, the largest newspaper Web site in the country with nearly 14.5
million users (source: Nielson NetRatings NetView March 2007). The next issues
of PLAY Magazine will appear on June 3, August 19 and October 28.

PLAY
Magazine was also named one of the hottest magazine launches by MIN (Media
Industry Newsletter) in 2006, and four feature stories from PLAY have been
chosen to appear in

“The Best American Sports Writing
2007,

” to be published by Houghton Mifflin later this
