SkyLife Chooses TANDBERG Television for SD and HD Upgrade

TANDBERG
Television, part of the Ericsson Group, announced that it is providing a
satellite head-end system upgrade to Korea Digital Satellite Broadcasting Co.
Ltd., more universally recognized under its ‘SkyLife’ brand name. As

Korea’s only
satellite broadcast operator, SkyLife is at the forefront of the country’s
television landscape and is aiming to offer more channels and continue its
improvement of advanced services to its subscribers. Following a competitive
review of video head-end providers, SkyLife selected TANDBERG Television’s
advanced solutions because they meet the operator’s needs today, and provide a
firm foundation for the future.

TANDBERG
Television will provide SkyLife with its market-leading statistically
multiplexed encoders. The TANDBERG E5770 encoder provides the best possible
standard definition (SD) MPEG-2 real-time encoding available today and sets the
new standard for optimizing picture quality as well as maximizing channel
count. TANDBERG Television will also provide its next-generation EN8090 MPEG-4
AVC high definition (HD) encoder which substantially reduces the bandwidth
required to broadcast HDTV, enabling an increased number of channels to be
distributed over SkyLife’s satellite network.

“We
are pleased to be able to draw upon the technical leadership and expertise of
TANDBERG Television as we implement the next stage of our growth. We are
continually seeking to provide a more advanced, interactive television service
to our subscribers and TANDBERG Television is enabling us to move forward in
this way,” said Sung-Yong Woo, CTO of SkyLife. “We were impressed
with the performance of TANDBERG Television’s products and believe they will
not only enable us to provide a better service now, but will lay the
foundations for the future of television in

Korea.”

SkyLife’s
full commercial broadcast service was launched in 2002 and since then has
acquired 1.9 million subscribers. It offers 95 video, 25 pay-per-view and 60
audio channels and since its inception has introduced services such as
electronic program guide (EPG), interactive broadcasting and HD transmission of
all matches of the 2006 FIFA World Cup.

“As
the only satellite broadcaster in the Korean market, SkyLife is a forward
looking service provider seeking to constantly improve its offering to its
subscribers. It recognizes that TANDBERG Television’s next-generation advanced
solutions can enable it to achieve this progression,” said Graham Cradock,
executive VP and general manager of TANDBERG Television APAC. “We are
delighted to be working closely alongside SkyLife as it rolls out more advanced
services across its network, both now and in the future.”
