Steve Hellmuth promoted to NBA Entertainment Executive Vice President of Operations and Technology

Steve Hellmuth has been promoted to Executive Vice President of Operations and Technology for NBA Entertainment (NBAE), the NBA Deputy Commissioner and COO, Adam Silver announced today. Hellmuth will continue to be responsible for the league’s Information Technology, Broadcast Operations, and Engineering departments; and managing the award-winning NBA.com Network of Web sites. Additionally, he will work closely with teams to further incorporate new broadcast and lighting technologies into the design, construction, and operation of NBA arenas.

“Steve has helped revolutionize the way in which our fans around the world follow the NBA,” said Silver. “His leadership position in technology will be crucial to the continued growth of the game through an ever-expanding roster of digital initiatives.”

Most recently, Hellmuth directed the first-ever live sports events in 3D HD for the 2007 NBA All-Star Game in Las Vegas and also Game 2 of The Finals 2007 at Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland. He also led the recent launch of the NBA digital media archive, the first major professional sports league to unveil such an initiative. The NBA is currently in the process of digitizing the league’s entire video library – more than 400,000 hours of games, highlights and programming – to create the digital media archive.

In NBA arenas, Hellmuth has implemented new technology to further enhance the game experience, including new LED backboards that illuminate at the end of each quarter, the creation of clear shot clocks over the basket sanctions, and the use of precision timing. He was also instrumental in the relaunch of NBA.com in time for the start of the 2006-07 NBA season, which resulted in all-time traffic records for visits during the year.

Hellmuth rejoined NBA Entertainment in December 2000 as Senior Vice President of Operations and Technology after spending two years as the Senior Vice President of Major League Baseball Productions, where he engineered the revitalization of MLB Productions, building a creative staff of more than 50 people and spearheading the design and construction of the new MLB Productions state-of-the-art facility.

During his original nine-year tenure with the NBA, Hellmuth served as Vice President of Operations and Technology for NBAE and was responsible for the production planning, technical, and operational management for NBAE. He also oversaw the creation of broadcast standards for new arena design and the development of a real-time courtside statistics system that serves media around the world.

Throughout a career that has spanned more than 30 years, Hellmuth has also served as General Manager for Potomac Television Communications and was a Production Manager in the sports division for NBC, where he produced the Emmy-nominated telecast openings for the 1986 World Series and coordinated the production of Olympic profiles for the 1980 Moscow games.

Hellmuth graduated from Princeton University in 1975 with a bachelor’s degree in art history. He resides in New Jersey with his wife, Theresa, and their children, Alexandra and Nick.
